Once again, the AES will host an all-star series of events and presentations during the [email protected] Pro Sound Symposium: Live & Studio, including the return of the “Main Stage: Studio” sessions, hosted by producer/engineer/author and [email protected] manager, Studio Recording Content, Bobby Owsinski.
Main Stage: Studio session topics will range from Outside-the-Box recording techniques, to re-mastering the classic Jackson Browne album Running On Empty, to audio education and career insights.
Taking place over three of the four days of the [email protected] Pro Sound Symposium, Main Stage: Studio events bring together some of the biggest names in the recording and production world for an educational and entertaining look at all things audio.
The [email protected] Pro Sound Symposium takes place during The 2019 NAMM Show, January 24 – 27, as part of the NAMM U Education Center on the 4th floor of the Anaheim Hilton, immediately adjacent to the new North Hall pro audio exhibits.
“We’re really excited about the sessions scheduled for the Main Stage: Studio program this year,” states Owsinski. “Not only have we brought together some of the top hit-makers of our time as presenters, but the topics are extremely relevant to everyone in the recording end of the business.”
On Thursday, January 24 [email protected] takes a look at the recording, production, and remastering of some of the most popular records of all time.
In the session “Running On Empty – Remastering a Classic,” mastering engineers Gavin Lurssen, Reuben Cohen and Ron McMaster discuss the process of remastering iconic productions for multiple modern distribution formats and the many variables that must be taken into account.
Later that afternoon, Bill Smith hosts the tribute “The Genius of Geoff Emerick,” playing recordings and sharing stories from Geoff’s illustrious career with The Beatles, The Zombies, Stealers Wheel, America, Supertramp, Robin Trower, Elvis Costello, Cheap Trick and many more.
Main Stage: Studio host Owsinksi adds “We’re all most pleased to be able to celebrate the outstanding career of the great Geoff Emerick in a session led by his long-time assistant and friend Bill Smith. You’ll be surprised at just how many big hits he was a major part of aside from The Beatles.”
Saturday, [email protected] takes a look at popular and practical topics in the studio world and beyond. The first session of the day, “Social Media Promotion for Musicians and Engineers,” looks at the latest techniques for using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to promote yourself and your music with [email protected] Main Stage: Studio events host Bobby Owsinski.
Next up, producer/engineer Sylvia (Tool, Johnny Cash, Prince, System of a Down, Tom Petty and the Red Hot Chili Peppers), noted for her unique recording ideas (such as the pickle filter and the smashed piano), leads attendees through examples of her storied recordings in “Outside-the-Box Recording Techniques.”
“What Comes Out of the Speakers” takes on new meaning as engineer/producer Andrew Scheps (Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Audioslave, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Linkin Park, Hozier and U2) takes the stage for an in-depth look at music, art and the creative process, with a special focus on compression techniques used during mixing today’s biggest hits.
Finally, the importance of quality session documentation and metadata is discussed by Veva Sound VP Drew Waters in the presentation “Capturing Metadata for Engineers: From Studio to Smartphone,” offering insight to this crucial aspect of industry growth.
On Sunday, [email protected] takes focus on audio education and the main goals of the Audio Engineering Society – promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research – with the session “Audio and Higher Education and Studio Sound.” The Main Stage: Studio events conclude with a Studio Career Panel.
