Moorea Masa and Swatkins recently performed and filmed at TELEFUNKEN’s soundstage for new episodes of “Live From The Lab,” with the band’s performance tracked with a complement of the company’s microphones.
Steve Watkins (Swatkins) is a keyboardist, songwriter, producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist who’s noted for the talkbox old-school analog effect of using his larynx and a vinyl tube to shape the sound of his keyboard.
“Recording at Telefunken is an incredible experience,” he says. “I love coming in with a well-traveled band and bringing that energy into a truly professional production space. We had great musicians and my badass wife Moorea has a one-in-a-million voice that sounds extra lovely with everyone fully-miked with great microphones and captured by top engineers.”
Vocalist Masa adds, “Having such great gear and a top team of engineers and filmmakers inspired me and our band to give one of our best performances ever.”
TELEFUNKEN microphones and direct boxes used for the performance included an M80 on female lead and backing vocals, M81 on male vocals, M82 on kick and floor tom, TF11 on Leslie organ speaker, TF51 Stereo set on drum overheads, ELA M 260 stereo set on hi-hat and ride cymbals, U48 on mono overhead, and the U47 stereo set as close room mics.
The “Live From The Lab” music video series is recorded and filmed at TELEFUNKEN’s facility in South Windsor, CT. Each session is tracked live with TELEFUNKEN microphones and features performances from a variety of local, regional, national, and international artists and ensembles.
The multitrack audio files from these sessions are available for free download via clickable links below the individual performance videos. All audio files are presented in .WAV format and were recorded at 24-bit/ 48 kHz sample rate. They are labeled in the same format with the source listed first (LEAD VOX, ACOUSTIC, PIANO), followed by the microphone used (C12, AR-51, etc.) and can be downloaded and imported into a DAW of choice.
