Road Test: RCF HDM 45-A Loudspeaker

The new RCF HDM 45-A is a 2-way active portable loudspeaker loaded with a 15-inch neodymium woofer and 1.5-inch-exit (4-inch voice coil) neodymium compression driver on a 90- x 60-degree (h x v) constant directivity horn.

The onboard 2-channel class D amplifier is rated to deliver 2,200 watts peak (1,100 watts RMS). Frequency response is stated as stated frequency response of 45 Hz to 20 kHz. and maximum SPL is stated as 133 dB peak.

Also onboard is the company’s proprietary FIR filtering technology (called FiRPHASE) designed to foster coherent distribution of sound without phase distortions. The DSP provides eight preset configurations, including:

L1 LINEAR, a linear response curve recommended for listening outdoors and in low reverberation rooms.

L2 LINEAR HIGH PASS, which adds a 24 dB filter at 100 Hz when the loudspeaker is used with a subwoofer or for monitor applications.

L3 LINEAR LOW-LEVEL PLAYBACK, which adds a +3 dB boost at low frequencies for playback or music application without a sub.

L4 LINEAR INDOOR, which adds a -3 dB shelf intended for speech applications or for use in reverberant rooms.

C1 CLOSE, for when listeners are within about 3 meters (about 10 feet) way – it rolls off some highs.

C2 CLOSE HIGH PASS, which is similar to the previous preset but adds a 24 dB high-pass filter for use with subs.

F1 FAR, for when listeners are more than 10 meters (about 33 feet) away. It adds +3 dB to the highs to compensate for air absorption.

F2 FAR HIGH PASS, you guessed it – this one rolls off the low end for use with subs.

In addition, there’s a delay that can help in time aligning the loudspeaker to other sound sources, with a maximum delay of 20 meters. Once the selected parameter is chosen, it’s saved in memory and the HDM 45-A will remember it even if the loudspeaker is turned off and on again.

The rear of the enclosure sports recessed Powercon input and output power jacks and a recessed control and input area with XLR input/output jacks, an LED display, and a rotary encoder – push the knob to select a function and rotate it to select a value or preset. There are also etherCON connections to utilize RCF’s RDNet networking in two different ways – it can monitor the loudspeaker and local presets can be used, or the local presets can be bypassed with settings done via RDNet.

The cabinet is made of a polypropylene composite material that the company notes is designed to dampen vibrations, particularly at maximum volume settings. It’s fronted by a rugged steel grille and is equipped with a top handle as well as two side handles for ease of carrying. Measurements are measures in at 28.1 x 17.4 x15.6 inches (h x w x d) and weight is 48.5 pounds.

There’s a steel pole socket mount on the bottom of the enclosure, as well as rubber feet that keep the loudspeaker from moving when it’s placed on subwoofers or other surfaces. Four M10 threaded inserts allow optional eye bolts to be installed for flown applications. The cabinet is also angled so it can also handle stage monitoring duties.
