Milab has announced the introduction of the Pearl ELM-T Bernt Malmqvist Signature Edition, a new tube microphone designed by Bernt Malmqvist, who first began working for the company in Stockholm, Sweden in 1954 and has, at age 86, amassed 68 years of microphone design experience.

In early 2020, Malmqvist was given a “carte blanche” to develop his own signature model, spending well over two years on the project, and the result is the ELM-T Bernt Malmqvist Signature Edition, a true tube microphone in a Rolex Green Nextel finish with variable polar patterns. Power is supplied by a custom-made PSU from Andreas Grosser in Berlin.

The microphone is built around the proprietary Pearl ELM condenser capsule with a 7:1 height-to-width ratio. In combination with a true tube amplifier, the mic is designed to provide a warm and detailed sound with a smooth off-axis response. The large diaphragm is desibned to help keep self-noise at 15 dBA while a frequency response extends well beyond 20 kHz.

Every ELM-T is built by hand in southern Sweden and delivered in an aluminum case with a PSU, cable, shockmount and an individual frequency chart. A formal presentation of the mic will be held at an event at Power Station Studios in New York City on October 18 and at the AES Convention on October 19-20. First deliveries are expected in December 2022.

Pearl Microphones, founded in 1941, is one of the oldest continuously operating microphone manufacturers in the industry, and all mics are built by hand in Åstorp, Sweden. Every mic is delivered with its own individual frequency chart and protected by a lifetime warranty. In 2017, Pearl Microphones was acquired by its former sister company, Milab Microphones AB.
