Women’s Audio Mission Announces Upcoming Events

Winter 2020 class and event schedule includes "Intro to Audio Production & Recording" with additional classes specifically focused on Pro Tools.

Women’s Audio Mission (WAM) has announced its winter 2020 class and event schedule which includes “Intro to Audio Production & Recording” with additional classes specifically focused on Pro Tools.

Attendees are offered the opportunity to learn a new skill or upgrade their knowledge base with classes taught by award-winning women and gender-non-conforming instructors.

WAM Level 1: Intro to Audio Production & Recording

Learn audio production and basic recording techniques used in recording everything from podcasts to music. In this 8-class series you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the physics and science behind sound
  • Learn basic recording techniques, and about signal flow and the recording chain
  • Learn how microphones work and basic microphone selection and placement
  • Learn the basics of digital audio and recording with digital audio workstations like Pro Tools
  • Learn how to solder and make your own cables!

This is a foundational level course that provides the necessary skills for basic recording, production, and digital technologies. Classes include a combination of lecture and hands-on learning and a free 3-month subscription to WAM’s award-winning online training eTextbook at SoundChannel. We recommend taking Level 1 as a prerequisite to all other WAM classes.

Date/Time: 8 Monday evenings (1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16) from 6:30-9:00 PM
Location: WAM Oakland, Unity Council Building, 1900 Fruitvale Ave Suite 3A, Oakland
Cost: $275 for WAM members, $375 for non-members.

Introduction to Pro Tools

Introduction to Pro Tools teaches the fundamentals of using a Pro Tools system, the digital audio workstation (DAW) most used in professional recording studios.

In this class attendees will:

  • Learn to build sessions that include multitrack recordings of live instruments, MIDI sequences, and virtual instruments
  • Develop essential techniques for recording, editing, and mixing
  • Learn keyboard shortcuts, plug-ins, automation, importing and exporting audio
  • And more!

This course focuses on using Pro Tools in a digital audio recording and production environment. Attendees should have a basic understanding of recording techniques, processes, and equipment, such as the following: miking techniques, mixer signal flow, audio monitoring equipment, MIDI devices. This class can be used for recording, mixing, editing in Pro Tools for music and podcasts. Classes include a combination of lecture and hands-on learning. WAM recommends taking Level 1 as a prerequisite to all other WAM classes.

This course is based on the Pro Tools 101 textbook available here which is recommended to get the most out of the course.

Intermediate Pro Tools

The class expands on the principles taught in the Introduction to Pro Tools course and introduces core concepts and skills you will need to operate a Pro Tools system running mid-sized sessions with dozens of tracks. An existing knowledge of Pro Tools is required to take this course. This course is for folks looking to expand their knowledge of Pro Tools and to learn additional tools, including:

  • MIDI
  • Elastic Audio
  • Editing
  • Mixing in Pro Tools
  • Automation

This course focuses on using Pro Tools in a digital audio recording and production environment.
