Ultra Wideband (UWB) Panel Announced For AES 2023 In New York

A number of stakeholders will explain the emerging technology, provide examples of its application in wireless products, and discuss the need for a UWB audio interface standard.

At the 155th AES Convention in New York City (October 25-27) at the Javits Center, a number of stakeholders in Ultra Wideband (UWB) will be presenting a panel discussion titled “UWB – A New Wireless Tech in the Future of Pro Audio,” explaining the emerging technogy, providing examples of its application in wireless products, and discussing the need for a UWB audio interface standard to help ensure interoperability and quality implementations.

The panel will begin at 10:15 am local time on Friday, October 27 in room 1E11 of the convention center. UWB is stated to offer sufficient throughput to deliver linear PCM 24/96 stereo with a latency of under 3 milliseconds while operating bi-directionally, making it well-suited for wireless microphones and in-ear monitor systems as well as home theaters, home studios, earbuds, headphones/headsets, and gaming accessories.

Typically for large-scale deployment, UWB has been used for location applications. Real-time audio has a very different level of complexity, and two issues that need to be addressed are body blocking and system synchronization/timing. Both issues have been addressed and will be discussed at the AES panel. Presentations include information on solving body blocking via Antennaware’s patented Bodywave antenna, which is stated to provide up to 20 dB of extra gain in the link budget, along with system sync/timing developments by representives from Nexonic Design and the UWB Alliance.

The panel will also include information regarding a new AES Standards task group within SC-02-02 : AES standard for digital input/output interfacing — UWB high-res, low-latency audio interface. The development of this interface standard is expected to facilitate ease of integration and reduce R&D time for product development.

In addition, the panel will have various demos and examples of devices, including headphones and evaluation platforms. Go here for more information.
