Solid State Logic has announced Blitzer, a new multi-character compressor plugin that’s the latest addition to its growing SSL Complete subscription and designed to emulate classic hardware compressors such as the FET ’76 limiting amplifier, valve ‘2A’ leveling amplifier, Fairchild and others.
Blitzer is an analog “attitude” compressor, designed to be capable of deliver soft, saturating compression up to explosive brick-wall limiting. It offers 10 compression curves across 10 ratios, each with a unique shape and tone inspired by some of the most sought-after analog dynamics processors to provide the distinct responses of vintage tube, VCA, FET and optical compressors within a single interface.
Blitzer supplies a range of sound sculpting tools. During mixing, slam room mics using the familiar “all in” BLITZ! mode are designed to give vocals body and character with valve-style leveling, or energize instruments with heavily saturated compression. For mastering, Blitzer a pallet of compression styles — the DRIVE function is designed to gently “warm” or decimate an incoming guitar or synth signal while the MIX function offers instant parallel processing. Warm tracks with soft-saturation and gentle harmonics without compressing using Blitzer’s 1:1 ratio.
A detection sidechain high-pass filter (HPF) is engineered to make it easier to remove unwanted low-end frequencies from triggering the compressor, particularly well-suited for drum buses. Additional features include AUTO GAIN for maintaining levels, a cross-platform preset system with A/B and undo/redo stack, and SSL’s contextual help system.
