Designer Notebook: An In-Depth Look At The New JBL VTX Series Line Array

For each array in a template, JBL Line Array Calculator can be run, adding loudspeaker models directly to the workspace.

Based on a few configuration parameters, the correct quantity of amplifier racks is then added.

Amplifier channels are associated directly with the band-pass inputs overlaid on the array representations – all amplifier control can therefore be carried out from the arrays.

Networking has been reduced to a simple to “drag and drop.”

All test, tuning, and calibration control interfaces are embedded, so there is no need to spend time designing control panels.

Finally, the dedicated show mode provides the monitoring and control needed to run a show. And, for enhanced control and monitoring capabilities, the amplifiers are also compatible with the Powered By Crown iPad/iPhone application.

The VTX-LZ laser is a useful accessory that helps precisely focus VTX Series arrays for optimum audience coverage while streamlining the setup process. Typically a single LZ can be mounted on an array’s top enclosure (via included hardware) to serve as a visual reference while setting the overall array site angle in accordance with Line Array Calculator predictions.

For more advanced system tuning applications, multiple LZ lasers can be deployed to serve as site angle references for individual array circuits, assisting in physical measurement microphone placement to correspond with virtual measurement microphones shown in JBL Line Array Calculator modeling software.

This facilitates array calibration via circuit level gain shading and tapering adjustments, as a first step prior to array tuning where equalization is applied to the entire array to compensate for the effects of room acoustics.

The JBL Line Array Control Panel is also common to Performance Manager, providing a convenient, consistent interface for both modeling and real world adjustment.

In terms of preset development, a key goal was to establish a new performance baseline standard with V5 processing for both VT and VTX Series so that they will “play well together” from a sound design perspective.

To this end, we worked towards developing a new generation of Short Throw (ST) and Long Throw (LT) presets for V25, VT4888 and VT4889 that is consistent with what has been previously-introduced for VT4886 subcompact models. By developing common ST, LT presets for all models, by design, they all respond consistently to a common JBL Line Array Control Panel (LACP) interface and model consistently within JBL Line Array Calculator (LAC).

Both LAC and LACP modeling and control interfaces are integrated into JBL HiQnet Performance Manager then implemented on turnkey VRack2 or VRack4 turnkey power amplifier racks, or alternatively, on custom amplifier racks provided that they loaded with Crown IT 12000HD or Crown IT4 x 3500HD power amplifiers.

All loudspeaker processing is done in the power amplifier; input section EQ filters on the amps are reserved for LACP to allow for array calibration and remaining input EQ filters are available for system tuning.

Through Performance Manager, we effectively automate modular, cut-and-paste preset management along with system tuning and control, providing maximum flexibility combined with efficient and reliable operation.

This approach ensures ongoing VT/VTX system-level compatibility, while allowing VerTec enclosures to function as a worthy fill system complement to main left-right VTX V25 arrays while future VTX models are developed.

Another way of looking at it is that V5 and VRack provide an upgrade path that protects the current VerTec owners’ investment while they build VTX inventory.

Bigger Toolbox

VTX is an entirely new product series at JBL Professional and, as its name implies, is an extension of the VT Series.

Extending VerTec performance was a key goal while developing VTX, and significant performance enhancements have been realized through V5 processing and Crown ITechHD DSP/power amplification.

Although VTX can be considered as an extension of VerTec, at the same time, VerTec V5 is an extension of VTX since it is compatible with the VTX System standard and complementary from a sound design perspective.
