Designer Notebook: An In-Depth Look At The New JBL VTX Series Line Array

In addition to validation by objective measurements, numerous subjective listening tests have demonstrated the sound quality improvements of the D2 transducer compared to traditional metallic-diaphragm based counterparts.

Another benefit is the additional flexibility that is provided by the possibility of connecting the voice coils either in parallel or in series.

Compared with a conventional compression driver, the D2 has double the number of voice coils and more than double the power handling, but with a 30 percent reduction in weight.

This results in a significant increase in pure high frequency sound pressure levels available in the same physical footprint.

A third-generation waveguide and proprietary RBI Radiation Boundary Integrator assembly, enhanced for the VTX Series, maximizes the combined output of three D2 drivers. The curved RBI profile combined with angled mid section slots provides stable horizontal pattern control for the high frequency section.

A unique tuned resonant absorption chamber (TRAC) is integrated into the waveguide itself, eliminating throat-related cancellations due to back pressure from the mid-range section. This novel TRAC approach was also employed in the waveguide designed for the VT4886 subcompact model.

V25 vertical plane coverage consistency from front-to-back and improved throw capability is obtained due to the combination of several factors: reduced enclosure height; the physically-relieved mid/high section; the new HF waveguide that provides maximum radiating surface area combined with optimum wavefront shape.

All of these factors combine to allow for proper line source array coupling from 0-10 degrees.

The Full System

As noted previously, the VTX Series also integrates other high-end Harman Pro technologies, including Crown Audio VRack DSP and amplification. VRack is a pre-configured, pre-built touring rack fitted with three I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers, a power input panel, and custom-engineered input/output panels that is available in two configurations: VRack2 and VRack4 are loaded with three IT 12000HD and three IT 4 x 3500HD amplifiers, respectively.

VRack can be thought of as a building block for a VTX system. Each time a VRack 12000 is added, it powers the recommended 3:2 ratio of V25 to VTX subs, while VRack 4 x 3500 provides a building block for powering six V25s (two enclosures in parallel).

In addition to the performance advantages of a standard package, VRack also enhances compatibility for cross rental between sound companies who are VTX Network Partners.

The ITechHD amplifiers are compatible with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager design software that facilitates system design. The Performance Manager workflow starts with array templates.
