Old Is New Again: Developing A System For Orlando’s Revitalized Beacham Theater

For main loudspeakers, Kenney elected to go with a line array approach.

He first looked at some of the recently introduced compact line array candidates, but became concerned that these might not be up to the performance specs of the venue.

Further research led him to the EAW KF740, which offers a 3-way design (provided by eight transducers per cabinet) and exceptional output while still maintaining a relatively small footprint.

“It’s a heavy performance box in a compact size that’s lightweight and efficient,” Kenney states. “It provides more than enough low end/boost to handle anything we throw at it, and it sounds fantastic. It was exactly what I was looking for.”

Left and right main arrays flown to the sides of the stage each contain seven KF740 enclosures.

They’re joined by eight SB1002 subs arrayed in a mono block below the stage and four EAW JF80z compact loudspeakers as fills on the front of the stage. The loudspeaker contingent is completed by four EAW MK5396 2-way loudspeakers for balcony fill.

Delivering Headroom
Having been impressed with K Series amplifiers from Powersoft for several years, Kenny took this project as an opportunity to put them to work to drive the house loudspeakers and subwoofers.

“This rig needed substantial power, and the amplifiers competing with Powersoft just didn’t make any sense,” he notes. “While I’ll admit it’s nice that Powersoft amplifiers are only 1RU and extremely efficient, their performance is the key – and that is what won the day.

“We have more then enough headroom and have not yet had to push it,” he continues. “They’re amazing amplifiers.”

Two Powersoft K3 and two K6 amplifiers drive the mids and the highs in the line arrays, while a combination of four K8 and one K10 on the line array lows and subwoofers.

For the fill and delay loudspeakers, the choice was the Powersoft M Series, with a single M14D on the four JF80z compact models and a M30D for the MK5392 2-way boxes.

These amplifiers, joined by two EAW UX8800 digital processors that handle all system and loudspeaker processing, are housed in a custom rack built under stage left, along a ground level walkway.
