New System For Theatre At Arts Presenter Valspec In Quebec Employs d&b audiotechnik

Integrator Go Multimedia and A/V installer LSM team up to equip 850-seat multi-purpose venue with system headed by Y-Series loudspeakers with ArrayProcessing joined by B22 subwoofers and more.

Albert Dumouchel Theatre, an 850-seat venue run by Valspec, a non-profit organization that supports multidisciplinary cultural activities located in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, Canada, was recently outfitted with a new main sound reinforcement system utilizing d&b audiotechnik Y-Series arrays in a project by integrator Go Multimedia and A/V installer LSM (both located in Quebec).

The previous system was installed in 2002 and had become outdated. The d&b rig was chosen following an evaluation process involving systems from multiple manufacturers that were demonstrated at various events.

The new design, which can be used in multiple configurations to more specifically meet the needs of each event, incorporates seven Y8/12 elements with ArrayProcessing per side joined by two B22 subwoofers (one per side) along with four 44S compact loudspeakers for frontfill, two Y10P point source boxes for delay, and another single Y10P in the center to support film activities. Audio power is supplied by five 40D amplifiers for the arrays and subs as well as a 10D for the frontfill and delay loudspeakers.

“The installation went very well, following the clear and precise instructions of the consultant design for the integration of the equipment,” states François Jomphe, sales and integration specialist with LSM. “No problem and/or unforeseen event compromised the delivery, installation, implementation and tuning of the complete system according to the defined schedule. Our team are very proud to have been able to participate in this great project with d&b products.”

“The venue has a shape that can be reminiscent of a bowling alley; not very wide but very deep,” adds Simon Lemieux, director of technology at Go Multimedia. “Depending on the type of event being held there, the room can be divided approximately at two-thirds using a velvet curtain. It was, therefore, important that the sound system could provide consistent level distribution and tonality for all seats in the reduced configuration of the room as well as in the fully open configuration. It is this performance of the d&b system, thanks to ArrayProcessing, which won over the staff during their demo sessions.”

Go Multimedia was mandated to help produce the tender documents to acquire the sound system, and in collaboration with the theater’s TD and head of sound, planned all the new infrastructure required to implement the equipment.

“We are impressed by the consistency that ArrayProcesssing brings to our venue,” concludes Martin Primeau, technical director at the theatre. “The system is flexible, and we can adjust it to the needs of every production. We are also impressed by the small 44S loudspeakers, which are surprisingly powerful.”
