5Linx Corporate Meeting, Las Vegas
Atlanta-based PPi recently supplied projection technology for a corporate meeting at the Las Vegas Convention Center by 5LINX, a direct marketing company providing electrical, power, cellular and satellite services to customers throughout the U.S. PPi, which specializes in producing corporate events, combined concepts from award and reality TV shows – especially American Idol – to bathe the 64-feet wide by 40-feet deep multi-tiered stage in colors from spotlights.
Geoffrey Platt, event production designer at PPi, chose a Christie YK100 yoke with a Christie WX10K-M projector to help product the desired result.
“One of the main elements of the show was a opening segment with lighting and pyrotechnics shown behind a center screen measuring 23-feet across by 11-feet high that tracked eight feet up-and-down, from which presenters would emerge,” he notes. “The Christie YK100 and projector were tracking to this center screen, which is why we used the yoke solution. The quality of the WX10K-M projector we used in the yoke was great.”
Designed for staging and event productions, the YK100 supports the Christie M Series 3-chip DLP platform as well as the Christie LX1500 LCD model, supplying a range of brightness levels from 5,700 to 15,000 ANSI lumens and a broad choice of resolutions. to fit any event requirements.
For this event, HD10K-M 3-chip DLP projectors were used for both a secondary screen and the “halos”—tension fabric cut in rings eight feet across that hung 20 feet above the stage. Projected onto the halos were graphic treatments above customized 5LINX logos.
PPi also used four Christie HD18K 3-chip DLP projectors – one each for four separate, main screens – to display graphics, PowerPoint, video and IMAG.
“I’ve never had any problems with Christie projectors and they have always been rock solid,” Platt concludes. “We had no issues at all. I love the color, contrast and picture quality and everything worked flawlessly out of the box.”
SouthCrest Church, Georgia
A major expansion completed this year at SouthCrest Church in Newnan, GA involved creating a new 700-seat main sanctuary in an unfinished portion of the building and converting the church’s existing sanctuary into a 500-seat youth worship center.
“The build-outs, renovations and upgrades were all part of the church’s vision to provide more opportunities to connect with families and young people,” explains Terry McCarthy, systems designer for Advanced Systems & Technologies (AST), which has offices in several U.S. locations and headed up the AVL systems portion of the project.
McCarthy used nearly 100 products from Elation Professional, along with 200 feet of trussing from sister company Global Truss America. The lighting system in the main sanctuary includes 52 Elation Opti QA Par quad-color RGBA LED par cans, 25 Elation Light Shaping Filters, 16 Elation ELED Tri Par 56 compact 42-watt tri-color RGB LED par cans, six Elation Design LED Strip RGBAW 5-color (red, green, blue, amber white) LED strips, two Elation Platinum Spot 5R compact moving heads powered by Philips Platinum 5R lamp technology, and one Elation Antari HZ-350 haze machine.
This gear package satisfied the wide range of requirements that SouthCrest had for its lighting system, such as multi-functionality to illuminate a variety of different activities (worship services, live performances, video recording), while at the same time being energy efficient, budget-friendly and easy to program and operate.
“With every stage lighting configuration that we design, there are many elements that we consider,” notes McCarthy. “First the basics – three points of light: key light back light and fill. We also look closely at the stage plot before we determine the fixture and truss locations, laying out an optimum coverage of each upstage, downstage and front stage position.
“We then choose fixtures to create quality stage wash and spot locations for live performance and video recording. Simultaneously we look closely at the creative elements – color and effects. Elation’s LEDs and intells provide great flexibility to achieve thousands of great looks at super competitive prices.”
