Polishing A Jewel: The Beacon Theater Gets Its First In-House Concert System

Power for these loudspeakers is provided by QSC PowerLight amplifiers coupled with Dolby Lake digital signal processing.

The second (and main) phase, completed earlier this year, is headlined by several sets of new line arrays and subwoofers, joined by a new house console and outboard gear.

All of the line arrays are made up of JBL VerTec elements, many of them equipped with DrivePack (DP-DA) technology providing Crown Audio BCA (Balanced Current Amplification) Class I power, AES digital audio, BSS Omnidrive HD signal processing, and Harman HiQnet networking compatibility.

Attaining complete coverage of the extremely tall venue, from top to bottom, presented a challenge that required dual sets of full-range arrays and then some.

Flanking the Beacon’s expansive stage are two arrays, each comprised of eight VerTec VT4888DP-DA 3-way midsize elements (90 degrees nominal dispersion), with three VT4880A dual- 18-inch subwoofers per side arrayed tightly (and vertically oriented) on the stage floor.

In addition, two more arrays, each with six more VT4888 midsize line array elements and two VT4882 (dual-15-inch) midsize arrayable subwoofers, are flown well above the stage proscenium to supply upper balcony coverage.

And, a single array of four VT4487ADP-DA 3-way compact elements (100 degrees nominal dispersion) are flown centrally, above the apex of the proscenium, to provide down fill to centrally located seating sections on the floor.

Overall system processing is Dolby Lake, with QSC PowerLight amplifiers again the choice to power the JBL elements not outfitted with DrivePack.

Rounding out the project’s second phase is a 46-channel Midas Venice 320 analog mixing console, along with Klark Teknik gates, limiters, compressors, and equalizers. These are positioned in the sound booth that’s located at the back of the orchestra/main level.

The project marks the third audio retrofit of an MSG-owned venue by Clair, which has also installed JBL VerTec line arrays in New York’s Radio City Music Hall as well as the Chicago Theatre.

“MSG prides itself on providing the best in sound and entertainment to the customer in every venue we have,” notes Arrigoni.

“We’ve had a lot of great experience with the VerTec line arrays, not only in terms of performance, but also with consistent positive feedback and requests from clients,” states Devenney.

“With the success of the Radio City Music Hall and Chicago Theatre installations, it was a simple decision for us to continue relying on VerTec.”
