Grammy Award-winning mix engineer Jesse Ray Ernster (Doja Cat, Burna Boy, Megan Thee Stallion) is offering free online mixing masterclasses covering essential mixing techniques, problem-solving strategies, and client communication skills, all applicable to various genres and situations. The videos are available here at the Mixland website.
The classes are focused on two projects, one with rap artist Docta Bionix and the other with pop artist Tessa Rae. With Docta Bionix, Ernster builds the mix from scratch in a blank session and works to bring it to life, implementing some analog hardware on the mix bus as well. Meanwhile with Rae, the focus is on the art of subtlety and of “not messing it up” in utilizing a less-is-more approach.
Specifics of the sessions include techniques to beat the reference mix with loudness and more compelling dynamics, simultaneously as well as client interaction and mix notes. In addition, he demonstrates what can be achieved with limited gear and a budget-friendly setup.
