Yamaha Unveils New DXS12mkII & DXS15mkII Powered Subwoofers At NAMM 2018

Next-generation portable models with class-D amplification provide numerous performance and feature-set upgrades.

Yamaha has introduced the DXS12mkII and DXS15mkII, two next-generation portable powered subwoofers designed to provide clean, punchy, loud low-end reinforcement.

Both the DXS12mkII and DXS15mkII are housed in unique bandpass cabinets outfitted with class-D amplification stated to deliver 1,020 watts of peak power. Maximum SPL is specified as 134 dB and 135 dB, respectively, with response down to 42 Hz and 40 Hz (again, respectively).

Because the amplifiers do not require active cooling, the subs can be run at high volume for extended periods and not risk thermal shutdown or distortion issues.

Connectivity has been improved as well in relation to their predecessors. On the original DXS models, the XLR thru outputs passed full-range audio from the inputs to any connected loudspeakers, while on the new DXSmkII models, these outputs have a high-pass filtered option, meaning that all crossover work is done within the subwoofer.

In this configuration, connected full-range powered loudspeakers (such as the Yamaha DXR or DBRSeries) can devote their full output power to amplifying only those frequencies that the DXSmkII subs are not. The design is intended to better overall projection and supply a more detailed soundstage across the full frequency spectrum.

For mounting a full-range loudspeaker on a pole atop the subwoofer, both models now have an M20 threaded socket in addition to the standard 1-3/8 inch (35 mm) non-threaded socket. For stacking loudspeakers directly, insets on the top of the cabinet minimize unwanted vibration. Further, plywood construction decreases weight compared to the original models by approximately six pounds.

Additional features of the new models include:

— Cardioid mode for users who need to control the dispersion pattern.

— Selectable crossover point of 120 Hz, 100 Hz, or 80 Hz.

— Proprietary DSP providing either boost or low-end extender.

— Polarity invert switch to maximize impact and output.

— Integrated mounts for optional casters for easier transport.

“These new additions to the DXS lineup bring updated performance and rugged construction to offer remarkable bass response, even in smaller footprint systems,” states Nithin Cherian, product marketing manager, Yamaha Pro Audio. “The connectivity and crossover options allow integration with almost any full-range system.”
