On Saturday, September 4, a group of industry professionals will band together for BikeFest, a fundraising bike ride from AV event supplier SFL Group’s headquarters in Reading, UK to the PLASA Show at Olympia London.

BikeFest aims to raise funds for industry charities and mark the return of live events and entertainment following 18 months of unparalled challenge.

The organizers are calling for fellow cyclists to sign up and follow them on one of two routes: a relaxed 40-mile ride direct to London via flat roads and cycle paths or a more strenuous 80-mile ride traversing the Surrey Hills. The two routes will cater to all levels of cyclists, from casual and commuting cyclists to serious road bikers. London-based cyclists are also invited to join for the last leg through the capital.

All money raised will go to Backup, the technical entertainment charity. Backup will then channel the funds to Stagehand, Music Support, Acting For Others and #MakeItBlue. Each charity has been a dependable source throughout the pandemic, helping to ensure the industry’s workforce is recognized and supported.

Those wanting to participate in BikeFest need to make a one-off donation at least £50, which is payable upon booking their place. Places are limited to 24 cyclists per route, so it is recommended to book them as soon as possible.

BikeFest follows in the tracks of several fundraising bike rides to cross the finish line at the PLASA Show. In 2019, 10 cyclists covered 100 miles raising over £1,600 for Backup. This year, BikeFest is aiming to exceed that figure while facilitating in-person community spirit.

Peter Heath, Managing Director of PLASA, says, “Once again we ‘get on our bike’ for a cause that is now more important than ever. BikeFest will contribute towards the essential work of our chosen industry charities, so the more people who sign up, the more we will achieve. New for this year we’ve devised a more accessible route to allow for more people to join us. We hope you will, and we look forward to seeing you on the road on the 4th of September.”

John McEvoy, White Light Head of Business Delivery & PSA Council Member, adds,“I’ve seen the impact the lack of work during the pandemic has had on our freelancers, combined with the absence of state support. Events like these are a great way of giving something back to the industry and raising much needed funds, whilst having some fun at the same time. I’ll be pulling on my lycra on the 4th of September, and I hope to see lots of you on the day (although the lycra is optional).”

Lee Dennison, a trustee of Backup, concludes, “With so many of us not being able to meet up and see each other, this is a great opportunity for the industry to come together and raise some much needed funds for our family members. I’m looking forward to the day and seeing some friendly faces.”
