Volicon Announces Observer With Integrated Loudness Monitoring

Volicon has announced that its Observer video monitoring and logging system now features integrated real-time loudness monitoring that simplifies compliance with new and emerging standards.

Intuitive overlay controls within the Observer’s Web-based interface now give operators continuous visual feedback on loudness measurements.

The system’s flexible recording, logging, and playout functions make it easy for operators to review noncompliant content and immediately troubleshoot loudness issues.

“With commercial loudness being legislated in the United States and in Europe, it’s more important than ever that TV stations and networks are able to monitor the loudness of their broadcasts in real time to comply with regulations and improve the overall user listening experience for viewers,” said Mike Asebrook, senior director of product marketing.

“Observer’s fully compliant, integrated loudness monitoring simplifies the overall monitoring workflow and adds value by eliminating the hassle and cost of working with external systems.”

The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act in the United States and new guidelines released by groups including the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Italy’s AGCOM are making loudness monitoring a necessary part of broadcast operations.

The new loudness monitoring feature for the Observer streamlines this task, providing a clear and easy way for users to monitor and log audio for multiple stereo and 5.1 channels and comply with both the BS.1770/A85 and EBU Tech 3341/3342 specifications.

Observer provides a constant on-screen indication of both program loudness and true-peak signal levels.

Operators have instant access to the conflicting area of the broadcast and are able immediately to view measurements, troubleshoot loudness according to an acceptable range, and use logged video and audio evidence for playout, export, DVD delivery, or archiving for later use.
