University Of The Nations Outfits Ohana Court With RCF

Owens Audio Video Design equips outdoor worship area & basketball court in Hawaii with HDL10-A dual 8-inch 2-way active line arrays.

Serving an international fellowship of Christian students, the University of the Nations was born out of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), a highly decentralized international movement of Christians from many denominations. Their history dates back to 1978 when Pacific & Asia Christian University in Kona, Hawaii was founded. As their teachings spread to other campuses throughout the world, now with over 600 locations in 160 different nations, they have since adopted the new moniker University of the Nations.

The 40-acre Kona campus is home to some 700 students offering Associate Degrees ranging from the arts to counseling and early childhood education to biblical studies. The campus is also home to the Aloha Lanai Cafeteria, Hawaii’s largest dining facility with a capacity of 3500.

Nearly a decade ago Orlando, Florida-based Owens Audio Video Design was called on to implement a new system for their Ohana Court, an outdoor worship area & basketball court.

Being an open-air facility, that system was exposed to nature’s elements and getting tired. Over the years, and with advancements in loudspeaker technology, with the long-time relationship the university has with the integrator, they called upon Owens once again to refurbish the facility, this time specifically requesting a line array solution.

“Our Company is familiar with the line array solutions offered by RCF, and we choose their HDL10-A (dual 8-inch 2-way active line array) system to best fit their budget and performance needs,” say company principle Bob Owens.

The system design features four arrays for coverage – two seven box arrays in the center along with two four box arrays that also included two 15-inch HDL15-AS subwoofers flown on either side. The outer arrays did not need to throw as long, so less boxes and sub support needs allowed the system to look especially consistent as all four arrays are the same length, while covering the room perfectly, and adding some more low frequency to the flown part of the rig. Two SUB8006-AS’s (dual 18-inch active subwoofer) are added under the stage. Says Owens, “the system definitely rocks.”

An RCF DX4008 4×8 matrix loudspeaker management system controller handles the entire speaker processing, and a Furman Remote turn on system starts it all up with a “turn of the key.”

“We also added a new Allen and Heath dLive C-64 channel console,” says Owens, while at the same time able to re-utilize their existing GLD80 console as a recording desk via Dante. The School has had a long relationship with Owens AV Design for more than 12 years and relies on their design skills and knowledge to help with multiple spaces throughout the campus.

Formerly audio director for Walt Disney World’s Creative Entertainment Department, Owens has been a design consultant and technical director for nearly 40 years. “I opened Owens AV Design to provide services to the themed entertainment market, and also specialize in enhancing technical systems in religious facilities in this time where many churches are growing and need honest help.” The company offers system consulting and design along with product sales and integration expertise.
