The Institute of Acoustics (IOA), the UK’s professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration, has presented SynAudCon President Pat Brown with the 2012 Peter Barnett Memorial Award.

The Peter Barnett Memorial Award, which is made annually, recognizes advancements and technical excellence in the fields of electro-acoustics, speech intelligibility, and education in acoustics & electro-acoustics.

Institute of Acoustics, Sam Wise comments “Pat Brown’s contribution to electro-acoustics is measured by his gut level and study-enhanced understanding of audio and his remarkable teaching skills.”

Peter Barnett had a wide range of interests in acoustics but primarily in the fields of electroacoustics and speech intelligibility and was a stalwart of the Reproduced Sound series of conferences.

Brown has contributed greatly to education in acoustics and speech intelligibility through SynAudCon, an audio training company dedicated to providing practical, in-depth training on the principles of audio and acoustics for the last 20 years.

As owner of Electro-acoustic Testing Company, Inc. (ETC), a company that measures loudspeakers to produce data files for use in room acoustics modeling programs, he has also developed methodologies and specifications that have influenced a number of industry standards regarding acoustics.

“It is an honor to receive the Peter Barnett Memorial Award from an institution as notable as the Institute of Acoustics,” Brown says. “I haven’t invented anything new over my audio career. What I have tried to do is take essential audio practices, streamline them, and help incorporate them into the workflow of the general audio practitioner.”

In addition to his responsibilities at SynAudCon and ETC, Brown writes articles for several professional industry publications. He authored three chapters for Glen Ballou’s “Handbook for Sound Engineers” and is co-author of Sound System Engineering 4th Edition.

He considers the SynAudCon web-based audio training courses his most complete “book” – the web-based training courses explain the concepts and principles of audio with animations and demonstrations through various levels of learning.
