Dara AV (based in Staten Island, NY, and formerly JD Systems) recently deployed a new system comprised of HARMAN Professional Solutions components to deliver music, announcements and more at the Staten Island Mall.

With more than 1.2 million square feet of retail floor space, Staten Island Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in New York. Seeking a significant improvement to an existing PA system dating back to the 1970s, Dara AV developed an upgrade using JBL Control Series loudspeakers, Crown DCI amplifiers, and BSS signal processors.

“Staten Island Mall asked us to update their outdated PA system with a controllable, scalable solution,” says Jak Daragjati, president of Dara AV. “They were originally considering a Bose system, but after hearing how great HARMAN products sound they quickly changed their minds. The biggest challenge was providing adequate coverage without impacting the aesthetics of the mall. The JBL Control series speakers were exactly what we needed — they provide plenty of volume and offer versatile mounting options.”

Over 300 loudspeakers are installed throughout the facility, including JBL Control 14ct full-range ceiling models to deliver extended coverage coverage and Control 64pt full-range pendant loudspeakers for sections of the mall with open architecture ceilings. In addition, JBL Control 25-1 wall-mount loudspeakers also utilized on the project are designed to offer consistent dispersion in a weather-resistant design for indoor and outdoor use.

All loudspeakers are driven by Crown DCi 4|600 amplifiers, with a BSS BLU-103 Conferencing Processor selected to supply flexible signal routing, AEC processing, and a built-in voice over IP (VoIP) interface for announcements. A BSS Contrio EC-8bv Ethernet wall controller is used for controlling volume across eight different zones.
