(Sometimes) Overlooked Workhorses

Line arrays and large-format loudspeakers get the lion’s share of attention, but in reality most sound companies don’t need a large system at every event. Many can be handled with smart deployment of more compact 2-way loudspeakers, usually accompanied by a small quantity of subwoofers.

While we tend to think of loudspeakers along these lines as entry-level “speakers on a stick,” numerous manufacturers have developed higher-quality models that go beyond that metric, yet they’re still below the radar in terms of recognition.

Usually priced more than entry-level, they deliver very high-caliber performance and reliability, and thus can provide quite a good return on investment.

In addition, they often incorporate the latest technologies originally developed for their larger, more sophisticated siblings, and are “voiced” to provide an identical sonic signature, so as a result can also serve in valuable subsidiary roles (i.e., fill) at bigger shows.

Let’s take a look at a host of these “overlooked warhorses” currently available, many having made their debut within the past couple of years. All generally share similar dimensions, with a range of 22 to 30 inches in height and weight spanning from 35 to 75 pounds (some a few pounds more). Most have a poll-mount socket and handles, and some offer rigging options along with a cabinet angle for stage monitoring.

Martin Audio just unveiled the CDD-LIVE! Series, combining coaxial design with the consistent coverage of proprietary Differential Dispersion technology. Three full-range models have an 8-, 12- or 15-inch coaxial driver. Onboard is class D amplification and DSP under proprietary VU-NET software control, as well as Dante networking. Multi-angle enclosures offer vertical and horizontal orientation, as well as stage monitoring.

The CDD-LIVE 12 represents the series well, providing 110-degree horizontal coverage (by 60 degrees vertical), and as with all three models, the HF components can be rotated by removing screw-free perforated steel grilles. The amp delivers 2,000 watts LF and 500 watts HF (peak) output to the drivers. DSP functions include parametric EQ, delay, muting, gain and “plug and play,” or user-defined presets. The line also includes two subwoofers, CSX-LIVE 118 (single-18) and 218 (dual-18), both powered.

Renkus-Heinz PN/PNX121

Renkus-Heinz offers a plethora of quality options in this category, including the PN/PNX Series. They’re available in powered (PN) or passive (PNX) versions and can be utilized in point source and array configurations. Full-range models include 6-5-inch, 8-inch, dual 8-inch, 12-inch and 15-inch options. Proprietary Complex Conic Horns, designed around the spherical expansion of the acoustic pressure wave, enhance constant beamwidth and directivity.

PN models have PowerNet that combines class A/B amplification and signal processing into a single compact unit. Versions with the company’s RHAON (Renkus-Heinz Audio Operations Network) are also offered, providing control over digital audio distribution and DSP, as well as remote control/ monitoring via standard Ethernet hardware and cable. Companion subs include the PN/PNX112-SUB (single-12) and 212-SUB (dual-12).

The recently introduced Redline (RL) Series from EAW includes the RL12 (12-inch) and RL15 (15-inch) 2-way active trapezoidal enclosures. The full-range boxes carry a 1,250-watt bi-amplified electronics package with EAW Focusing processing and DynO algorithms to optimize the power transfer from the amplifiers to transducers.

Both models offer consistent directivity via proprietary Beamwidth-Matched crossovers on a 90- by 60-degree rotatable horns and 4-aperture elliptical ports that provide bass support while helping maximize transducer-cooling air flow. Three voicing options are available for tuning, and both offer symmetrical monitoring angles that allow left and right wedge pairs. Companion sub: RL18S (18-inch) active.

dBTechnologies DVX D12 HP

The DVX Series from dbTechnologies includes four active full-range boxes (8-, 10-, 12- and 15-inch). Each full-range model carries a Digipro G2 class D amplifier and proprietary DSAP that acts as a controller in providing equalizer, crossover, limiting, thermal control, and phase and time alignment. Also included is preset capability, including presets that are optimized for stage monitoring applications.

Peak power ratings of the amplifiers range from 800 watts (smallest) to 1,400 watts (largest). All models also have rotatable horn waveguides, with dispersion of 90 by 70 degrees for the two smaller models and 60 by 40 degrees for the two larger ones. A range of companion subs are available, and five specific stage monitor models are also offered in the series.
