SE Systems Deploys RCF HDL20-A For Multiple Applications At Merlefest 2015

Line arrays for main stage field delay towers and front fill; TT25-SMA stage monitors on the traditional stage

SE Systems deployed RCF line arrays and stage monitors for several applications at the recent MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC, with 11 stages hosting more than 100 acts during its four-day run

Specifically, 32 RCF HDL20-A active two-way line array modules were utilized at the Watson main stage field delay towers surrounding the stage outfield. In addition, HDL20-As were also used as front fills on the Watson stage.

“This is the third year we used the HDL20-A’s and they sound great,” notes SE Systems chief engineer Buck Parker. “All boxes worked flawless and handled the many styles of music throughout the festival.”

For on stage monitoring, SE Systems utilized 12 RCF TT25-SMA stage monitors on the Traditional stage, with audio technician Bob Thornley noting, “Setting up the stage on day one, I was surprised to see the TT25’s come off the truck. I mean, with a 15-inch low frequency woofer and a 1.5-inch high frequency compression driver powered by a 750-watt amplifier, they are known to be high SPL ear benders. And we were setting up mostly for acoustic acts.”

He adds, “All was put to rest as soon as we did our first sound check. The band was very pleased. The vocals sounded outstanding. The 15 provided the vocal warmth and the throated high frequency driver provided the clarity we needed. And I don’t know if I’ve heard a better phase alignment between the lows and highs of any floor monitor.”

Without much time between bands, Thornley also indicated the ease of use of the monitors. “The TT25’s really made stage changes easy. At only 44 pounds and with an easy-to-grab built in handle, “it was easy on my back. And with all the connections and pass thrus on the sides, it made for a very clean looking stage.

“The best part of my experience with the RCF TT25’s happened Sunday around lunch time. I heard from the band we were setting up that bluegrass veteran Peter Rowan told them that the Traditional Stage was the best sounding stage he had played that weekend. Man it doesn’t get any better than that.”
