Producer Jacquire King Employs Universal Audio Gear For New Norah Jones Album

Norah Jones' new album utilizes the sound of Universal Audio's UAD-2 Plug-Is, 2-610 Mic Preamp and a 2192 Converter

With the Platinum-selling Kings of Leon album, “Only By The Night”, already under his belt, engineer/producer Jacquire King set about recording Norah Jones’ latest and highly anticipated offering, “The Fall”.

Released this month, the album boasts the sound of Universal Audio converters, mic preamps and UAD-2 Powered Plug-Ins throughout.

“It’s so exciting the way Universal Audio is partnering with [original hardware manufacturers] to really make UAD plug-ins legitimate. It’s already impacted the way I work,” said King.

“Since getting these plug-ins over the last few years, it’s the most significant shift in my work in terms of the way I’m doing things, and able to approach things.”

“The EMT 250 [plug-in] is amazing. That’s one of my favorite digital reverbs,” King continued. “It’s all over Norah’s record, on all of the songs.

“It just puts this beautiful halo of space and sound around her voice. It was really helpful to have something of that quality. That’s why I’ve always liked the EMT 250 hardware unit, and this plug-in did the exact same thing.”

Of course, King also employed a well-chosen selection of analog gear for Norah’s record.

“I used the 2-610 mic preamps extensively for bass and Wurlitzer. I also used it for background vocals,” he noted. “I love the way the EQ works, especially the top end.

“It’s got a really nice shape to it, and you can really crank it. It doesn’t sound harsh; it’s very pleasing.”

King possesses a wealth of old school recording chops, but was an early adopter of new technologies. Many of his first major recording gigs came about because he was so fast and efficient with ProTools, yet he has always relied on a mix of analog and digital technology to get his desired sound.
