Lynx Studio Technology has just released the new Hilo Reference AD/DA converter system, and it’s now available at Lynx dealers in the U.S. and Canada. International shipments will begin the week of March 12.
Long awaited since a “soft” introduction in May, 2011, Hilo’s feature set has been augmented and its user interface is completely redesigned with many new features. Functions include two channels of AD converter, six channels of DA converter, high-quality headphone amplifier, all controlled and monitored via LCD touch screen.
In addition to those core features, Hilo also acts as a monitor control system, location audio device (via optional battery operation), and a must-have unit for any mastering facility.
Hilo significantly changes the performance and possibilities of two-channel converters. Unlike most other models on the market, it offers analog-to-digital as well as digital-to-analog conversion. Its headphone amplifier and secondary monitor output have their own D/A converters which are fed from the on-board 32-channel mixer. This provides the ability to create three unique stereo analog mixes as well as a plethora of sub mixes for the digital outputs. The included LT-USB allows 16 channels of USB input and output to also be utilized.
For visual reference, the touch screen on the initial release will feature a retro VU style meter as well as modern bar style meters. Any input or output pair can be chosen for any meter. Hilo has five sets of user-selectable parameter menus to fully customize the Hilo experience. And since the operation of Hilo is entirely software-driven, Lynx will offer new features, screens, upgrades and enhancements, available via download from the company website.
The analog I/O section includes two balanced inputs and four balanced outputs plus headphone out. Digital connectivity includes AES/EBU, S/PDIF (via coax or optical), 8 ADAT, and 16 channels using the included LT-USB. Any mix of inputs can be sent to any output, made possible by the internal mixer. Initial shipments will feature a silver front panel. A second unit with black front panel will be available by mid 2012.

Hilo has a suggested retail price of $2,495.
