In this two-part presentation, Joe focuses on compression, using a relevant example of applying compression on a drum bus.
As he notes, compression can be a wonderful tool, but if not used well, it can really “jack things up.”
He starts with a focus on what he calls the “secret ingredient” of compression—the attack knob. It can enhance “punch and depth,” but it can also make a mushy mess of things when not applied correctly. The goal is usually to keep sound open and present, while fitting appropriately within the mix.
Next, Joe moves on to the release portion of compression, which he describes as a kind of “tone knob” or control. Here, transients can be fine-tuned and sustained in order to attain the desired tone.
