Focal Point Audio Technology has released the MPA-2, a 2-channel, fully discrete class A microphone preamplifier with no capacitors in its signal path that’s outfitted with full front panel digital control.
The MPA-2 offers 20 to 70 dB of gain, adjustable in 2 dB steps. Gain is set via dual rotary optical encoders and displayed with a dual 7-segment LED. All other functions are done via front-panel microcontrollers.
The unit incorporates a transformer-coupled dual input section and a balanced, DC-coupled output section, with both sections servo-controlled. There’s also multi-stage voltage regulation.
Additional functions include 48-volt phantom power, a 20 dB pad, polarity, a low-impedance (LoZ) option, and mute. The front panel set-up is saved in EEPROM so if power is lost, the settings will be recalled when power is restored. Also on the front panel is an LED indication of power supplies.
Metering on the front panel monitors output (-20 to 10 dB), and a peak LED indicator is also included (+24 dB). The rear panel includes an indicator for when phantom voltage is enabled.
