Fletcher’s NAMMservations (Or How I Went To Winter NAMM ‘09 And Learned About Drum Stick Free Zones)

Day 3
Dateline: ANAHEIM, CA, USA – I don’t know why I didn’t notice them earlier, but every entrance door had a very official sign: “No Drum Sticks”… Wonder what that’s about…?

Is it a comment on the lack of playing ability that we’ve all been subjected to on a fairly continual basis for the last couple of days? Or perhaps the “powers that be” of NAMM have come to realize that drum sticks are really weapons of mass confusion?

What do they know that we don’t?

Or maybe they tried to walk past the Zildjian booth and were subjected to some idiot bashing a cymbal without warning (and I’ll bet it was one of those “imported cymbals” which should be outlawed by international treaty and considered a terrorist threat…) But then again, I’m starting to repeat myself.

.

Today the show seemed almost completely void of “attendees,” granting a wonderful opportunity for many of the exhibitors to get out of their booths to check out the competition and other stuff that was going on.

The irony is that while they were out checking out the show, so was everyone else… Which left most booths pretty much unattended by senior staff, so real information was nearly unattainable…

Unless, of course, you headed to the hotel bars to check out the football playoffs, which I did, and where I found a whole bunch of staff.

I’m left with the same question as always: Is a four-day event is too long or too short? There’s no way to see everything, but on the other hand, I always seem to experience a sense of “information overload” and vast expanse of this exposition.

All in all, Winter NAMM ‘09 was a pretty good time… And the weather was wonderful… And best of all, I felt very safe and secure knowing I’d spent a few days in a “drum stick free zone.”
