First Look: The New QSC KS118 Subwoofer

The just-unveiled KS118 from QSC, the latest addition to the company’s KS Series, is a compact active subwoofer for a wide range of applications.

It includes a direct radiating 18-inch woofer powered by a class D amplifier stated to deliver up to 3,600 watts. Frequency range (at -10 dB) is listed as 35 to 111 Hz, with maximum sound pressure level at 136 dB (at 1 meter, peak).

Onboard DSP can be utilized to optimize and protect system performance. Two modes are provided: omnidirectional, as well as the ability to array two units in a cardioid arrangement, maximizing low-frequency output in front while minimizing unwanted energy around the sides and rear.

Crossover and delay can be adjusted and optimized, and scenes for commonly used applications can be saved and recalled. In addition, the proprietary DEEP mode provides additional low-frequency extension and driver excursion processing.

Designed for ease of transport and placement, the birch plywood enclosure includes ergonomic aluminum handles and four rear-mounted low-noise casters. It measures 25.2 x 20.5 x 30.9 inches (including casters) and weighs in at just above 100 pounds. The front grille is made of 16-gauge black powder coated steel.

A top-mounted M20 threaded pole receptacle accepts a 35 mm pole for vertical deployment with K.2 Series and other full-range loudspeakers. The cabinet can also be positioned horizontally without affecting performance. An optional transport cover, KS-LOC security cover and loudspeaker pole accessories are also available.

“With the introduction of the KS118, QSC now offers users an unprecedented choice in selecting the perfect low frequency companion for their sound reinforcement system,” says Chris Brouelette, product manager, portable loudspeakers for QSC. “Ranging from the ultra-compact KS112, to the single-enclosure cardioid KS212C and now the new, very high output KS118, this wide variety of subwoofer options present very compelling solutions for AV professionals and enthusiasts of all kinds.”

The new KS118, which succeeds the popular KW181 subwoofer, is covered by the company’s global 6-year warranty with product registration. In the next issue Live Sound International (November 2019), technical editor Michael Lawrence will share his evaluation of the KS118 via a Road Test review.
