FBT Loudspeakers Fill A Range Of Diverse Roles At Eccentric Studio In New York

Multipurpose venue that hosts live performances, showcases, recording sessions, and rehearsals

Scott Shear’s Eccentric Studio in Ravena, New York, situated in the Catskills, is a multipurpose venue that hosts live performances, showcases, recording sessions, and rehearsals.

Shear, a guitar player, originally started with the idea of building a place where he and his friends could play music and not necessarily be in a bar setting as well as provide a place to help support the music community with workshops and music camps.

He did the majority of the construction of the post and beam structure himself, literally moving a mountain of earth and stone to clear the area for the venue parking.

With so much versatility in the facility and a need to cover both floor and balcony levels, selecting a sound system took on added importance. Shear estimates that he’ll be able to get more than 300 people in Eccentric, depending on the event.

After researching available systems as well as relying on practical experience with other systems, Shear evaluated and ultimately selected powered FBT/QUBE loudspeakers for his facility.

Shear explained, “My cousin, who I work with building guitar amps, had heard the FBT speakers at a trade show and though they were outstanding. Along with his recommendation and hearing the system in action at Eccentric, I chose to go with them.”

The main system utilizes two Qube QSA 112a powered constant curvature line array loudspeakers augmented with two Qube QSA 118sa 18-inch bass reflex powered subwoofers for the low end.

Two FBT Verve 8ma powered monitors serve as the fill system for the balcony, while five FBT Verve 15ma powered monitors make up the monitor system. Shear is also using is an Allen & Heath 32 input console, as well as other equipment he brought over from a previous facility, including dbx equalizers and Lexicon and TC Helicon effects.

“I’ve had other speakers before, but none of them sounded as good as this system,” Shear stated. “The way the building turned out and combined with this sound system, for me, it doesn’t get any better.”
