De Effenaar Steps Up To Solid State Logic

Dutch music venue selects SSL Live L200, SSL L100, and 348 channels of SSL SuperAnalogue mic preamps for major upgrade.

De Effenaar is a music venue with an illustrious history spanning almost 50 years. Nestled in Eindhoven, the technology capital of the Netherlands, its two performance spaces have played host to an array of major artists including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence + The Machine, Editors, Nelly, Stromae, Queens of the Stone Age, The Ramones, Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and The Cure.

Towards the end of 2018, De Effenaar needed to upgrade its audio inventory, and the technical team engaged in an extensive evaluation of all live sound consoles on the market. At ISE 2019, the team confirmed an order for four Solid State Logic SSL Live L200s, one SSL L100, and 348 channels of SSL SuperAnalogue mic preamps.

According to Effenaar’s senior audio engineer, Sven de Hoog, the team of engineers had individually scored the four shortlisted brands in nine different categories, ranging from ease of use to available features and sonic quality.

“SSL consistently scored the highest in all categories, with an impressive 13 ‘maximum available points’,” de Hoog explains. “We’re all so excited. The sound of the consoles is killer; they are so easy to use, which is essential for guest engineers.”

Head of production, Jeroen Gerits, confirms it was a unanimous decision to opt for SSL Live.

“These are excellent consoles in their own right, but equally important is the advanced yet mature Dante implementation, which is key to the overall integration of all AV systems at Effenaar,” Gerits says. “The city of Eindhoven – ‘the Silicon Valley of the Netherlands’
– has innovation at its heart, being at the forefront of technology. Similarly, Effenaar is a smart venue, and SSL fits that ambition perfectly.”

Consoles, racks, and system integration will be handled by Audio Electronics Mattijsen (AEM), SSL’s Dutch distributor. AEM’s Rafael Nagelkerke adds:

“We are most delighted that the Effenaar team recognized SSL Live’s qualities, and the solutions we presented to their specific requests and workflows. With Paradiso in Amsterdam, Patronaat in Haarlem, and now Effenaar in Eindhoven, it has been firmly demonstrated that SSL Live is equally at home as a house console in venues for visiting
guest engineers, as it is in top-tier international tours.”
