Tech Focus: Dynacord Junction Temperature Modeling Technology

Inside a new technology that provides advanced system reliability in Dynacord’s new flagship IPX and TGX power amplifiers.

In this Tech Focus video, we’ll highlight and explain the concept behind one of the technologies providing advanced system reliability in these new models: Junction Temperature Modeling (JTM).

How it works:

For the safe operation of audio power amplifiers, each of the amplifier’s semiconductors has to be operated within its safe operating area (SOA). To keep the semiconductors in their “happy place,” conventional protection techniques can be used to protect the components. Although these often-used techniques provide sufficient protection and avoid overloading the electronics, there is also a clear downside to this approach; very high safety margins must be taken into account.

The maximum current is usually limited to a low and non-critical value. In addition, the temperature at the heat sink of the power components is measured in a simple way, and, when the critical temperature range is reached, the load is switched off or the output voltage is reduced. The semiconductors can therefore not be used at their full operating range, which means the amplifier performance is sacrificed for reliability.

With Dynacord’s Junction Temperature Modeling (JTM), the temperature of the semiconductors is modeled in real time, based on the operating parameters such as operating voltage, housing temperature, output current and output voltage.

This is done using an advanced continuously monitoring algorithm, which is applied to all the important semiconductors in the amplifier. Relevant operating parameters such as current and voltage are continuously measured, and the actual junction temperature of the power semiconductors is calculated in real time. Knowing the actual state of the semiconductors enables full utilization of their safe operating range – full reliability without premature limiting.

This approach allows an optimized usage of the semiconductor components, which ultimately leads to significantly more output power and uncompromising reliability.
