Big Head Todd & The Monsters Play Hermosa Beach With Bose ShowMatch

Front of house engineer Andy Torri takes the ShowMatch DeltaQ line arrays for a spin at the Hermosa Beach (CA) Summer Concerts series.

Andy Torri has mixed front of house for Denver natives Big Head Todd & The Monsters since 1989. “I was just out of school for music and sound, and I wasn’t finding any jobs,” he recalls. “Then Todd said, ‘I have a job for you.’”

That turned out to be mixing the band’s show on the road, just after their debut LP, Another Mayberry, was released. With the exception of a few years at Boulder’s KBCO, Torri has been with the band ever since.

Torri and the band first experienced the ShowMatch DeltaQ line arrays from Bose Professional at a fly date on August 18 for the Hermosa Beach (CA) Summer Concerts series. Since the band usually tours with only their own mix consoles, they’ve worked with just about every PA brand and type out there.

Provided by rental A/V production company Total Production Group, the ShowMatch system was an ear-opener for Torri. “It just sounded great,” he says. “I usually only get 15 minutes to tune the PA and then we do a quick soundcheck, and it’s less than ideal, but at this gig it was literally all we needed. The PA was pretty much perfect, with a few minor adjustments. The challenge was the wind near the beach, which can always be tough. But the high frequencies held together nicely. The clarity was excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised to have so much power and punch from such a small package. I’m looking forward to the next time I get to work with a ShowMatch system.”
