Atlantic Records recently reported that for the first time in its history, sales of digital music have surpassed those of compact discs.
A recent article in the New York Times states that Atlantic “has reached a milestone that no other major record label has hit: more than half of its music sales in the United States are now from digital products.”
The article also notes that while digital delivery is increasing, overall music sales are declining at a fairly rapid pace. In 1999, total music sales were $14.6 million, while this year, they’re expected to be about $10.1 billion.
“As a result, the hope that digital revenue will eventually compensate for declining sales of CDs — and usher in overall growth — have largely been dashed,” the article stated.
