An App For That: Recent Developments In Digital Console Software

The Remote iPad app for the new Roland Systems Group M-200i digital mixer is fully functional on all key aspects of the M-200i’s mixing and control parameters.

It provides preamp control, pan, high-pass filters, and extensive PEQ and GEQ control, as well as the ability to store and recall scenes, adjust compressors and gates, sends on faders, patching, effect editing and many other parameters.

Flexible options are provided for plugging in an iPad to the M-200i. It can be wirelessly connected using a router plugged into the LAN port on the M-200i or via a Roland wireless connect adapter plugged into a USB port.

Another option is to connect it via a multi-pin iPad cable included with the M-200i that not only provides wired connectivity but also charges the iPad.

Also available for download is the M-200i Remote Control Software (RCS) for Mac or Windows, allowing control of M-200i mixing and setup parameters from a laptop as well.

In addition, Roland offers an iPad app for the M-480 V-Mixer that’s also useful as a sub-display and controller when placed beside the mixer. It’s for use with the most recent firmware version of the M-480, and requires a wireless USB adapter.

Roland also recently announced updated drivers and software for its V-Mixing System components. And, with the Apple release of the Mountain Lion OS, Roland has updated drivers for V-Mixer consoles to run the RCS for Mac. Further, a recent RCS release to support Mac OS 10.8 is also available for the R-1000, a 48-channel multi-track recorder/player that can make rehearsals and training more effective with instant playback, virtual rehearsal and recording.

For its Vi Series, Si Compact Series and Si Performer, Soundcraft offers the appropriately named ViSi Remote iPad app. Now available in version 1.1.8, it offers adjustment of input channel levels and mutes, as well as adjustment of aux send levels and matrix sends, as well as level and graphic EQ settings on bus outputs. It also provides control of the Si Performer’s DMX master channels for lighting.

A single ViSi app can control a network of mixed consoles from both series. It uses Harman HiQnet architecture to connect the network of consoles to a wireless router, which communicates with the iPad. For further flexibility, multiple iPads may be used on the same network, even on the same console, so that individual artists can do things like control their own monitor sends.

The ViSi app is outfitted with the familiar FaderGlow aesthetic found on the consoles, illuminating the fader slots according to function with clearly defined colors. The app works offline for handy demo and training purposes. In the event of a wireless drop-out, both the console and audio are unaffected.

Soundcraft also offers Virtual Vi software, an offline graphic system and editor for the Vi Series. It can also be used in online mode to control the DSP core, in place of the control surface. Because it looks and works exactly like the real console, it can also act as a useful training aid. Virtual Vi software is only available in Windows format, but in most cases it’s possible to run it on a Mac by either booting into Windows XP using Boot Camp or using a Windows emulator such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion.

Mackie announces another update to the Master Fader iPad app for the DL1608 and new DL806 digital mixers. New Master Fader v1.4 provides an entirely new selection of vintage processing designed to provide sought-after musical characteristics of popular processors, including compression, gating and EQ. Note that modern processing is still available as well.

In addition, upgraded show management and overall snapshot operation makes DL mixers further suited for complex shows and use with multiple wireless devices. Users can even snap a photo of the band with their iPad camera or choose from a selection of icons to serve as channel ID. And, shows now load in the background, keeping all wireless devices online when a show is changed.

Mackie also just rolled out the new My Fader app for iPhone and iPod Touch for the DL1608 and DL806. Based on the user interface and workflow of the Master Fader app, My Fader v1.0 offers mix engineers a tool that provides pocketable wireless control as well as a set of features for artists to control their own monitor mixes. Access control can limit users to only their assigned aux.

My Fader provides control over multiple input channels at once and an output selector for access to any mix, and also includes channel muting, detailed channel ID and metering, and a master fader. There is also the ability to recall from any snapshots from the current show on the DL mixer for bands controlling the whole mix from the stage.
