Adele Live Tour Utilizes beyerdynamic TG MM1w Wireless Measurement Microphone

Audio system engineer Ulf Oeckel chooses the new measurement microphone to balance complex touring rig with dual stages and systems.

Adele is currently playing to sold-out arenas on a world tour. The elaborate sound needs require a constant focus on the singer and her voice. Acoustic effects are paired with consummate style during the entirety of the show.

To meet the high expectations of audio perfection, the engineering team relies on the new beyerdynamic TG MM1w interchangeable measurement microphone capsule to accurately test audio levels with the benefits of its ease of use.

The performance utilizes sections of both stage A and stage B throughout the show, making it necessary to adjust the sound source to the respective position of the artist. The sound design allows the sound source to be panned during the live show. The PA equipment is significantly more extensive for stage B, assigned as the solo center stage, while stage A serves as the main stage at the head of the arena. If the singer moves to one of the stages or between the two stages during the show, the sound source will follow her.

The responsibility for creating this live sound fell to a well-proven team including front of house engineer Dave Barcey and audio system engineer Ulf Oeckel- both of whom have worked together for global stars such as Pink and Cher.

In order to measure the PA systems of both stages (stage A at 270°, and stage B at 360º), Ulf Oeckel is relying on the new beyerdynamic TG MM1w.

Even before the measurement microphone was officially introduced at Prolight + Sound 2016, Oeckel worked exclusively with the combination of the TG 1000 digital wireless system, the TG 1000 handheld transmitter, and TG MM1w for the tour.

“The TG MM1w has now been on the road with me under tour conditions for nine months, and has proven itself as a very precise and extremely robust microphone,” reported the internationally experienced audio system engineer. Before Adele’s world tour, he had been using the beyerdynamic TG MM1w together with the TG 1000 system on tour with British artist Mark Knopfler, and was able to give beyerdynamic sound engineers useful feedback based on his experience.

“Thanks to the integrated booster, the transmission performance for use in arenas is now really great, and the handheld transmitter is also very reliable,” states Oeckel.

“Generally when I’m tour, I go through up five or six measurement microphones in this price class in the course of a year. Most measurement microphones suffer performance loss in the high-frequency range over time, and therefore become inaccurate. After nine months, the TG MM1w is still delivering constant and reliable measurements. That really impresses me since it is very similar to microphones that are significantly more expensive.”
