In November, the Federal Communications Commission released the full text of its Second Report and Order approving the use of the “white spaces” – the TV channels that are not actually occupied by a broadcast station – by unlicensed consumer wireless devices. The FCC now refers to these as “TV Band Devices” or “TVBD’s”. The 130-page document provides details of the technical, operational, and regulatory requirements that the new devices will be subject to. The FCC’s attention to the needs…

Shure Raises Concern Over FCC “White Spaces” Decision The Federal Communications Commission voted Tuesday (November 4) to allow technology companies like Google, Microsoft, Dell, and Motorola to produce “white spaces” devices that will use the same radio frequency (RF) spectrum now being used by wireless microphone systems. Final text of the rules is not yet available, but the order is purported to greatly reduce the amount of clear spectrum available for use by professional audio and communications equipment. The Commission…

Broadcast Groups, Networks Call For Comment Period On FCC White Space Report

Broadcast groups and networks have filed an Emergency Request with the FCC urging the agency to follow its own standard practice and seek comment on a technical report released last week by the Commission’s Office of Engineering and Technology. The report, which details interference test data for several prototype ‘white space’ devices, contains findings conclusively demonstrating that unlicensed devices relying solely on spectrum sensing threaten the viability of clear TV reception. “Simply put, until two days ago, it has been…

In a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, NSCA Executive Director Chuck Wilson expressed concern regarding white spaces proceedings and new television bandwidth devices. As recently as August 9, the FCC conducted a test of white spaces devices before and during a Buffalo Bills-Washington Redskins game in Washington D.C. The results showed that the prototypes did not accurately sense wireless microphone signals, a function that would be required to prevent interference. “Our members are alarmed by preliminary public reports about…

A number of leading Nashville-based music interests told the Federal Communications Commission today that allowing millions of wireless devices to operate in the same spectrum as wireless microphones without failsafe protections would be a “catastrophe.” United in one voice, the music interests said they are “disturbed” by manufacturers who are anxious to produce new television white space devices and, in the process, are pushing the FCC to “discount – even overlook” the poor performance prototype technology platforms have had in…
