Scoring Mixer Mark Cross using Soundelux ELUX 251 on NBC's ER and Third Watch

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Renowned independent scoring mixer Mark Cross stakes his name on the quality of his work and knows that the equipment he chooses impacts that quality dramatically. Currently recording scores for NBC's Emmy Award-winning and hugely popular ER as well as their auspicious drama Third Watch, Cross has taken to the Soundelux ELUX 251 large diaphragm condenser microphone to record everything from vocals to orchestral instruments to room ambiance.

Like all of Soundelux's microphones, the ELUX 251 is modeled after a classic vintage microphone. In this case, the ELUX 251 follows in the footsteps of the fabled and much sought-after Telefunken ELAM 251. Soundelux hand-builds the ELUX 251, maintaining stringent quality control over all components and construction to remain true to the archetype. Even the power supply mirrors Telefunken's original, unregulated design.

"I tested the ELUX 251 against a ELAM 251, and they're so close it's scary!" noted Cross. "David Bock, senior vice president (Soundelux) did a great job." Cross was first introduced to the Soundelux ELUX 251 when he was asked to write a review about it, owing to his considerable experience with vintage microphones. He compared the Soundelux to the Telefunken as an acid test, which the Soundelux aced, and the ELUX 251 has been at the front of his microphone arsenal ever since.

Taking advantage of the ELUX 251's tendency towards a rich low-end and an open, extended high-end (without mid-range boominess), Cross has recorded most of his vocal tracks with the new microphone. Popular session singer and Hans Zimmer favorite, Lisbeth Scott has been a frequent performer for ER and Third Watch. "The Soundelux ELUX 251 sounds incredible on Scott," observed Cross. "It's really a singer's mic - warm with a clean top-end. However, I use it on many other instruments as well. A couple of my favorites are oboe and English horn. I use it as a room mic, too." Cross preamplifies with a Neve 1073, a vintage unit that matches the vintage-esque ELUX 251 perfectly.
