111th AES CONVENTION, NEW YORK, NY,
September 21, 2001 - Commemorating the 10th anniversary
of the introduction of the AT4033, Audio-Technica has launched
their new Special Edition AT4033/SE Cardioid Capacitor Microphone.
Originally introduced in 1991, the AT4033 established a new
benchmark in transducer technology by breaking the price/performance
barrier, fundamentally changing the condenser microphone market.

Featuring the same performance and specifications as the original
AT4033, the new AT4033/SE includes a re-engineered shock mount,
a dust cover, and a custom wooden microphone case. The AT4033/SE
features a cardioid polar pattern and utilizes a vapor-deposited
gold-plated aged-diaphragm capacitor element with an internal baffle
plate to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the microphone system.
This 2-micron-thick gold-plated diaphragm provides accurate reproduction
of even the most subtle sounds, especially high-frequency signals
not easily reproduced by conventional large-diaphragm condenser
transducers. The AT4033/SE has an extended flat frequency response
of 30-20,000 Hz, a wide dynamic range, and the ability to handle
high SPL's (up to 145 dB, 1 kHz at 1% T.H.D., 155 dB with 10 dB
pad) without sacrificing high-frequency performance. The AT4033/SE
features a floating-construction element to achieve peak performance
and isolation from noise and vibration. In addition, the AT4033/SE
has a newly-designed heavy-duty shock mount to provide the ultimate
in mechanical isolation and secure mounting.
"Audio-Technica started a project in the late 1980's to develop
condenser microphone technology that would deliver performance comparable
to the industry standards, but could sell for less than $1000.00,
which at the time was unheard of," stated Jackie Green, VP
R&D/Engineering. "We worked for three years to refine design
and production techniques allowing us to produce a microphone to
accomplish our goals. We looked at diaphragm material, aging, suspension
and damping for more linear performance over a broad frequency range
and at high SPL's. Our production methods allowed us to produce
a consistent microphone with outstanding performance that does not
vary from unit to unit over time. No matter how many thousands we
have made, each AT4033 performs the same. That's why over the years,
the AT4033 has become a favorite for industry leaders like Phil
Ramone, Alan Parsons and Ed Cherney."
The AT4033/SE is available immediately with an MSRP of $529.00.
