New USP2 Adapter Available from Crown

NEW YORK, New York - November 2001 -- Crown International now offers the IQ-PIP USP2 Adapter that allows Crown’s non-PIP2™ compatible amplifiers to accept the popular IQ-PIP USP2 module. The new device permits most older Crown PIP™-compatible amplifiers – including the original versions of the Macro-Tech Series, Com-Tech Series and Studio Reference Series – to access the inherent power and versatility of Crown’s second-generation DSP-based IQ card.

By simply installing a USP2 module into the back of a Crown amplifier, audio system operators have a wealth of tools at their disposal, including programmable DSP filters, signal delay, thermal limiter, auto standby, input signal compressor/limiter, clip eliminator, presets, error reporting, aux input/output, listen bus and signal routing.

“Ever since the USP2 was first introduced, there has been a constant demand from both the installation and touring markets to integrate its advanced DSP technologies into every Crown amplifier possible, particularly with regard to older PIP products out in the field,” says Stephen Morris, Crown International marketing director for engineered systems. “With the introduction of the USP2 Adapter, we are enabling an enormous amount of our existing amplifier base to harness the superior benefits of this DSP.”

“At first, we focused primarily around the requirements associated with getting the USP2 module to function within the Macro-Tech 3600VZ, which is what a majority of the requests centered on,” Morris adds. “In doing so, we found a means by which we could scale the adapter card to allow the USP2 to function in most standard PIP amplifiers, including the bi-ampable MA-24x6 and MA-36x12, which are both frequently used on live stage monitor applications.”

A series of eight adjustable DIP switches on the adapter card allows the USP2 module to recognize what amplifier it is residing in and appropriately scale itself for optimum performance. Thanks to these switches, a single adapter can be used universally with most PIP-compatible amplifiers. Because the USP2 Adapter does not actually make these amplifiers PIP2-compatible, standard USP2 features such as load supervision, peak voltage limiter, average power limiter and amp fault reporting currently remain unavailable.
