Feedback in a sound system is that annoying howling or squealing tone you hear when the microphones pick up amplified sound from the loudspeakers. Sound from the loudspeakers enters the microphones, is re-amplified, and goes around in a feedback loop. Almost instantly, the sound builds up until a loud ring occurs - usually at a single frequency. Fortunately, there are many ways to kill feedback or prevent it in the first place. Quick Fixes Before the service, on each mixer/console…

In his previous article, Rob Stam discussed the first four “deadly sins” one can make as a technician, musician and/or worship leader. If you missed it, click here to catch up. Rob checks in here with the final three, with experience-based commentary and advice along the way. Yes, technical people and musicians can get along and work as true partners in worship excellence – while having fun at the same time! Deadly Sin #5: Not holding one’s tongue (or, how…

“You know, I’ve been doing sound here at my church for about two years now, and there are a couple of things that aren’t quite clear to me. First, where’s the bass and treble control? And, what are these knobs for - the ones on the console labeled high, mid and low?” I’ve heard questions like this posed more than once by people who do sound at their churches. And they’re great questions. Remember - we’re all in this together!…

Sound Operators & Musicians, Working In Harmony

Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of being a musical performer and worship leader, as well as a church sound engineer and technician. This has provided unique perspective from both sides of the platform; what I’ve learned on one side has helped me do better on the other side, and vice versa. Through this process, I’ve noted several problems and solutions that apply to the technical side, the creative side, and both. I’ve refined these observations and…

Provided by Sweetwater. Q: I’m fairly new to creating music of any sort. I don’t really play an instrument, so I generally use loops and samples to build my compositions. But, I’ve run up against a few roadblocks and thought you might be able to help me. I’ve found some wonderful old kicks and snares with a lot of personality on some old 1970s LPs. My problem is that there is some amount of cymbal or hi-hat over most…

This exclusive article is provided by AudioFanzine. When we hear sounds in the “real world,” they are in an acoustic space. For example, suppose you are playing acoustic guitar in your living room. You hear not only the guitar’s sound, but because the guitar generates sound waves, they bounce off walls, the ceiling, and the floor. Some of these sound waves return to your ears, which due to their travel through the air, will be somewhat delayed compared to…

Provided by HOW To Church Sound Workshops. This article is a the second part in a series on cable maintenance for worship. For part one on cable testing click here. One of the major causes of audio glitches and complete failure during worship services is the broken microphone cable. Churches spend a lot of time and money each year tracking down intermittent or lost audio signals due to cable problems. We advise sound teams to separate damaged cables from…
