Pro Production: Understanding The Language Of The “Show”
Alan Hamilton
05/16/13 05:44 PM,
When first starting out in audio, a newcomer will hear terms that may seem like a whole new language. These terms are very common to hear in arenas, union halls, theatres, and similar venues. While not so common in clubs, even there you can hear some of these terms used by the seasoned veterans of the business. This would be particularly true of clubs that work with regional and national touring acts. You can expect to hear experienced production people…

Can Award-Winning Recordings Be Made In A Home Studio?
Bob Buontempo
05/16/13 04:41 PM,
To begin with, there are many things that you cannot do in a home studio. A competent recording of a live band - still the mainstay of the recording industry - is usually impossible in your bedroom. Fitting an orchestra in there is also challenging. And even though the topic of this piece is whether award-winning (i.e., Grammy) music can be conceived, recorded and mastered in a home studio, there’s nothing to indicate that any such recordings actually have been.…

How Do You Know What Sounds Good?
Karl Winkler
05/13/13 04:41 PM,
Most of us feel that we know good sound when we hear it. We also have tools to help us analyze the properties of sound, and we’ve learned to interpret those measurements and equate them with good and bad. But I find it fascinating that sometimes even when things measure “poorly,” we say that it sounds good anyway. Or, conversely, sometimes the measurements look spectacular but “there’s just something wrong.” The challenge is defining what actually constitutes “good” sound, and…

Meyer Sound Constellation Helps Performing Arts Center Combine Several Halls Into One
PSW Staff
05/10/13 01:12 PM,
When planning its new performing arts centre, the Mansfield, Tex., school district faced a dilemma. Though it was determined that both a large auditorium and a smaller performance hall would be ideal for its range of events, their budget could not justify building and maintaining multiple spaces. A solution was soon found in the multi-use Cunningham Performance Hall of the Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts, which utilizes a Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system to provide the ideal acoustics…

In The Studio: Recreate The Setups Of Classic Guitar Gods
Jon Chappell
05/09/13 03:01 PM,
Guitarists are constantly seeking their own sound or unique voice. However, producers often resort to giving instructions like, “Give me a raunchy blues sound à la Stevie Ray Vaughan,” rather than “Give me something wholly original that I’ve never imagined before.” It’s not that producers are unimaginative or that they deliberately want to mimic another guitarist’s sound; it’s just that categorizing sounds saves a lot of time and gives you a point of departure. Often you’ll hear producers requesting that…

A Great Mix? Sometimes It Depends On Who You Ask…
Dave Rat
05/07/13 05:31 PM,
Mixing sound in the live realm is not rocket science. In fact, it’s probably closer to voodoo. A studio engineer creates a masterpiece that will (hopefully) live forever in permanent hard copy existence. But the very nature of a live mixing dictates that every show will be unique - and that none will be perfect. A front of house engineer is in the business of creating a memory. Impact, excitement and anticipation form the landscape of the journey you’re guiding…

Church Sound: The Importance Of Audio Team Leadership & Organization
Gary Zandstra
05/06/13 01:50 PM,
Over the years that I’ve worked with churches, the problems I find often have foundation in basic communication, organization and administrative skills - or lack thereof. Quite often I will visit with a church that is complaining of a lack of consistency in the technical aream and the explanation goes something like: “When Jim is here everything works, but when he’s not, it’s a disaster.” I know at that point that while Jim may be a great tech operator and…

Church Sound: Take Your Ministry Seriously—Know Thy Stuff!
Curt Taipale
05/02/13 10:42 AM,
Through my trips with a traveling music ministry, I’ve worked in many different churches across the country. That has given me the opportunity to work closely with many music pastors, church sound staff members and volunteers, and I have one pet peeve about those individuals—they are often exceedingly ignorant of the equipment they work with every week. Hello!!! My questions about simple things like “what console do you have, how many mic stands do you have” or “which amplifier drives…

PRG Deploys VUE i-Class For Wheel of Fortune At Madison Square Garden
PSW Staff
05/01/13 04:12 PM,
Wheel of Fortune is celebrating its 30th year this week with a series of episodes that were shot last month at Madison Square Garden in New York, where PRG provided more than 230 VUE Audiotechnik i-Class loudspeakers for sound reinforcement. “This is an extremely loyal fan base that has a well-established expectation for how the show should sound,” says Bill Daly, system engineer and designer for PRG Audio. “It was essential that the theater sound very natural-almost like the speakers…
