I am an audio engineer, a bass player, and a skeptic. So, when I first saw the Guitammer Buttkicker system, I’m afraid it was the skeptic that spoke up sarcastically: “Oh boy. Another gimmick! Yet another electronic toy to pay for!” But it was a cool idea, so I still went right over to look at it. I sat down on the drum throne (why is it that drummers need a “throne” and everybody else gets “chair”?) and it was…

What Makes A Quality Loudspeaker?
Pat Brown

The device commonly referred to as a “speaker” is more correctly referred to as a loudspeaker system. It is comprised of some transducers, a crossover network, an enclosure, and a few additional parts. Loudspeaker system designers must be familiar with the complicated interactions of the components that form the system. An assemblage of good parts does not guarantee a good system. (Note: For the remainder of this article I will refer to a loudspeaker system as simply a “loudspeaker.”) If…

Managing Power To Properly Use (And Not Abuse) Professional Loudspeakers

The entire industry knows (or should) that loudspeaker drivers are fragile, and that careful attention needs to be paid to how much amplifier power is applied to each component in a sound system. This is especially true in our world of live sound, where we are always trying to push our loudspeakers to get those last few decibels or final quarter octave of performance. While the technology behind transducers has advanced considerably in the last few decades, providing significantly higher…

An official opening by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and performances by José Carreras and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa have marked the restoration of Scarborough’s historic open air theatre. Originally built in Northstead Manor Gardens in the 1930s and officially opened by the Lord Mayor of London, Scarborough’s open air theatre is to this day the largest in Europe. At its creation, audiences flocked to see Edward German’s popular English comic opera ‘Merrie England’, the first production ever to be staged…
