Helping Clients Make The Most Of Studio Time Whether Mixing Or Recording

In a tough economy, an increasing number of bands, musicians, and church congregations are finding themselves financially strapped. When it comes time to record the next big album, be it praise music or hard rock, the DIY route is being increasingly chosen when money isn’t available to spend several days or weeks in a studio at the hourly rate. Some performers shun the studio for other reasons. “I get too nervous in the studio… I’ll just record myself with a…

Zen & The Art Of Mixing Console Cleaning & Maintenance

Editors Note: For more information on console maintenance, check out Properly Cleaning Mixing Console Faders. Ask 10 folks who work with sound companies their most detested chore in audio maintenance, and the majority will respond with “the cleaning of mixing consoles.” Hated or not, however, keeping consoles clean is a primary way to protect the investment and to assure that they will stay on the job and operate at full capacity. Many consoles cost at least as much as the…

EQ 101: What Are Those Knobs On The Console For Anyway?

“You know, I’ve been doing sound here at my church for about two years now, and there are a couple of things that aren’t quite clear to me. First, where’s the bass and treble control? And, what are these knobs for - the ones on the console labeled high, mid and low?” Believe it or not, I’ve heard questions like this posed more than once by people who do sound at their churches. It’s these folks, and others afraid to…

What’s Under The Hood? Power Amplifier Sections, Connectors & Classes
Bruce Bartlett

As audio professionals, the more we understand what’s under the hood of modern power amplifiers, the better we can make a wise buying decision. What are the main sections or parts of a power amp? Every power amplifier includes a power supply, an input stage, and an output stage. Most amps also have protection mechanisms; some have DSP, and a few have networking capability. Let’s explain each feature… Power Supply Basically, a power amplifier uses the input signal to modulate…

Design Principles For Distributed Sound Systems Serving Business Spaces

Before you start designing a business sound system, identify what the customer needs and expects: Fidelity Expectations. Does the client want a good, basic system; something a little better than average; or maximum bandwidth and maximum fidelity? Sound-Level Requirements. Will the system be used strictly for background music, or does it really need to rock? Usage. What kind of music will be played through it? For example, if it’s urban funk, then you’re going to have to think about the…

Determining The Amount Of Amplifier Power For A Variety Of Systems
Bruce Bartlett
07/14/11 02:24 PM,
A client wants to play folk music in a coffee shop. How much amplifier power is needed? A rock group will be playing in a 2,000-seat concert hall. How many watts will you need to provide? A jazz-fusion group bought some loudspeakers, and want to play them as loud as they can get without blowing them up. Which amplifier should you recommend? Questions such as these arise in any sound system design. To help you specify an optimum amount of…

Tools For Worship Audio: Evaluating & Selecting Loudspeakers

In the world of sound system design and installation, there’s an old adage that states, “Your system is only as good as the weakest component in the signal chain.” This is especially true of a sound system’s loudspeakers. They are the last link in the chain and are directly responsible for communicating everything that’s been done to the signal along the way. One thing’s for sure: if your church audio system sounds lousy, the listening audience will automatically shift their…

A Trend Or A Fad? When Should You Invest In New Technology?
Michael MacDonald
07/13/11 09:09 AM,
I define a trend as a lasting change in the direction of a technology or market. Webster’s dictionary says, among other things, that it’s defined as “ a line of development”. A fad, on the other hand, is defined by Webster as “a practice or interest followed for a time with exaggerated zeal”. This led me to consider the most recent “trend or fad” example in our industry: the line array. It’s true that these new, improved tools have taken…

Church Sound: The Impact Of Acoustics On Traditional & Contemporary Music Styles
Pat Brown

If you asked people how they fell about “room acoustics,” you’ll find that many don’t even know what it is. We’re immersed in reflected sound every minute of every day, but it’s largely taken for granted unless it becomes very annoying. In a given congregation, it’s likely that the majority don’t really care about the acoustics of the proposed new assembly hall. A heavily padded room that’s suitable for electronically amplified music and speech production is fine with them. However,…

Fill-osophy: Fill Loudspeaker Types, Applications & Optimization

Whether a system’s primary loudspeakers are point source clusters or line arrays, there may be a hole in coverage for the seats closest to those arrays. Curved line arrays (J-arrays) may - or may not - allow the lowest elements to be aimed appropriately to cover these nearby seats. More traditional point source arrays can be just as tricky. Simply throwing another box in at the bottom is not likely to provide the required coverage. Therefore, a dedicated down fill…
