In 2015, rock veterans and 39-year touring pros Toto released their latest studio album, XIV. Since then, they have been steadily touring the world in support of the release. For the very first time, keyboardist David Paich has been taking the stage with in-ear monitors – the Sensaphonics 3D AARO Active Ambient system. Keyboard tech Jordan Rippe is also using the 3D system throughout the show. Of course, nearly every major tour relies on IEMs, but like many old-school rockers,… View this post

    M. Erik Matlock 04/13/16 05:51 AM,
“Define rhythm.” This was the simple command of an instructor in recording school. A challenge to define a word we all understood, but couldn’t seem to articulate. “Rhythm is the anticipation of events. We know to clap on four based on our pattern from one, two and three.” His words. Maybe not the way Webster would spell it out, but an effective interpretation. That discussion summarized much about life in general, as well as the production industry. Businesses grow and… View this post

On the day before the Super Bowl last February, the major hits on an NFL playing field were at the O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California, supported by PK Sound Trinity arrays. A sell-out general admission crowd of 25,000 ardent EDM fans showed up to celebrate the big weekend featuring an impressive line-up of favorites including headliners Alesso, Diplo, Chainsmokers and Chromeo. “We made history in the Bay Area with the first Electronic Dance Music festival at O.co Coliseum, and the… View this post

After eleven years on the road with Widespread Panic, Chris Rabold has been in the front of house booth mixing for major artists such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Kenny Chesney and The Fray since 2011. While the venues, artists and rider may change with each tour, Rabold never leaves home without his Earthworks M30 measurement microphone. “I have an Earthworks M30 that travels with me in my backpack, which is the only piece of gear I own that travels with… View this post

Los Angeles native Katie Ferrara is a talented artist, and she’s letting the world find out, one gig at a time. The 27-year-old singer/songwriter is a relentless performer, playing cafes, clubs, parties, and busking on street corners throughout Southern California and beyond. She’s traveled the world as a performer, released multiple albums and videos, and recently toured New Zealand as a winner of the Toyota “Feeling the Street” contest. Performing in unconventional locations is pretty much a way of life… View this post

    Ike Zimbel 04/08/16 06:31 AM,
When I was coming up through the ranks at a sound company in the early 1980s, I did a lot of folk festivals. Within a few years I went from mixing a small satellite stage (with monitors from front of house) to main stage monitor mixer and then to main stage FOH mixer. During this process I transitioned from running my own show on the small stage to being an active participant in every changeover as the monitor engineer to… View this post

    in-ear monitoring
    Mike Sokol 04/07/16 03:48 PM,
Recently an attendee of one of my workshops e-mailed about problems he’s having in providing a bass guitar mix over a personal monitoring system utilized by a 4-piece band, all of whom wear in-ear monitors. The system has one transmitter feeding four receivers, receiving a simple split-track mix with all vocals on one channel and all instruments on the second channel. (Note that the bassist is plugging directly into the snake via an active DI box without any amplifier or… View this post
