Everyone Goes Home Safe: Furthering The Rigging Safety Discussion
Ken DeLoria
09/19/11 12:11 PM,
I began writing this series of rigging safety articles several months ago motivated by the many dangerous practices I’ve seen over the years. (See part 1 and part 2.) These disasters-waiting- to-happen lurk in clubs, small shows, medium shows, and sizeable temporary events. This past summer, we have witnessed staging/rigging tragedies in Canada, Indiana, and Belgium. The common element in each of these truly unfortunate incidents are media reports of extreme weather conditions. There’s a very human tendency to believe…

Consoles & Mixers For Churches, In Context
Jon Baumgartner & Keith Clark
09/16/11 01:48 PM,
Over the past decade, we’ve seen the proliferation of digital consoles in both live and recorded sound. This is not to say that analog consoles are going away at all, particularly with respect to house of worship systems. In fact, it’s a very safe bet that the vast majority of church systems are still headed by an analog console. Hector La Torre, Managing Partner and producer of the national HOW-TO Sound Workshops, notes that while digital consoles are a major…

I think the question could best be answered by the analogy: “What’s wrong with wetting your finger to measure wind velocity?” In truth, the VU meter does a great job of indicating the average level of a constant state signal. However the VU meter becomes unpredictable when attempting to measure the actual levels involved in a transient passage or in a complex waveform. Since music is composed of complex waveforms and transient passages a problem in accurate monitoring does exist.…

In Profile: Maryland Sound’s Bob Goldstein, Doing Really Big Really Well

It’s fair to say that Bob Goldstein loves a challenge, and the bigger, the better. “We do really, really big, really, really well. Everyone puts in the effort. There’s no quit,” he says. Consequently, when Goldstein talks about his life and career, he does so by relating anecdotes that focus on the challenges – personal and professional – that he and MSI have proudly met over time. Some are a result of the incredibly complex jobs he delights in taking…

Everything Breaks: Rigging Components & Vital Safety Factors

“Don’t go breaking my heart” - Elton John & Kiki Dee Whether it’s a shackle, a hoist, a crane, or a beefy fly frame, never forget that everything breaks. The only question is under what load and under what conditions. To address this issue, the rigging industry has adopted the term “SWL,” which stands for Safe Working Load. You might also see “WLL,” which stands for Working Load Limit. When you purchase a shackle, a pairing ring, or a length…

Real World Gear: The Latest In Compact Line Arrays

In this Real World Gear installment, we look at “compact” line arrays, which we’ve defined as those with 8-inch (and smaller) LF drivers. Previously we applied this designation to “small and mini” models; however, the market is evolving so quickly and dynamically that attempts to put together “like” groups of line array modules under a precisely defined criteria is fast becoming a thing of the past. The fact is that one company’s “small” is another’s “mini” is another’s “compact” –…

When a child is learning to walk, he is able to do no more than put one foot in front of the other and shift his weight. He learns quickly (after a couple of falls), that he must master these basics before he can advance to running, skipping, or dancing. His thoughts may not be quite so complex as we seem to imply, but the fact remains that for the time, he can only do one thing, and that without…

Real World Gear: Dynamic Microphones For Live Applications

Vocal microphones are most entertainers’ and engineers’ introduction to sound systems, their first point of contact and the first piece of equipment that they purchase and carry with them. The vocal quality is of paramount importance in most sung music, and the easiest way to improve it is often to change vocal mics. Dynamic mics use the same principle as a loudspeaker, except in reverse. A diaphragm attached to an induction coil is positioned in a magnetic field. Sound moving…

Showcase: Take Our Tour Of House of Worship Sound Systems

In the beginning there was the Word. As the congregation grew, sound reinforcement was needed to hear clearly at the back of the sanctuary. Few sound systems have as many challenges as those installed in modern houses of worship. Contemporary worship services have incorporated rock bands and have ambitions that rival corporate and theatrical productions. The service is often a cross between a high school musical and a Broadway show – all on a mission from God. Expectations are high,…

10:30 PM . . . the ‘NOW GROVE’. . . the comedy team has slipped back behind the curtain . . . the room is hushed . . . expectant. . . apprehensively darkened . . . unaware that tonight’s performance is to be, too, a live taping of material for Sammy Davis’ new Motown album . . . SAMMY DAVIS JR LIVE AT THE GROVE. Connected umbilically to the GROVE by some 400 yards of audio and coax cable,…
