Show Report: Conversations, Observations & New Products At Winter NAMM ‘09, Part I
Keith Clark

At the 2009 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim. I traveled the show floor - front-to-back and end-to-end - to see as many new products and talk with as many people as possible. Optimism was the word of the event, particularly among manufacturers truly excited about their new products. (Check out our Photo Gallery from the show!) I saw a lot of creativity, and a lot of usefulness, and a lot of both. There wasn’t one single product that was a…

“What Me Worry?” The Fun That Was Winter NAMM 2009
Keith Clark

There are times when the optimistic fervor (and a certain downright silliness) that are staples of the annual Winter NAMM Show get a bit tiresome. Not this year - spending a few days immersed in the “what me worry?” vibe proved a welcome diversion in this uncertain economic time. It’s not that the more serious issues of the day weren’t on the minds of many of the people I had the opportunity to talk with over the course of the…

The System & Audio Team For The Latest Nine Inch Nails Concert Tour

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has long been known for his penchant for cutting edge technology and pristine production values. While manifestations of this tendency have been apparent since the band’s early studio recordings, over the years they have noticeably transcended into NIN’s live shows, most recently for the “Lights In The Sky” concert tour. One of the technological advances on display, besides a stage-width, triple layered interactive LED video screen, was L-Acoustics new K1 line array. The system…

Real World Gear: The Latest Digital Consoles
Mark Frink

This year is the tipping point for digital consoles in regional and festival sound reinforcement. Discussions of sound quality aside, the benefits of digital consoles – consistency, repeatability, recall and automation – force users to adopt the new way and the advantage it brings to live events where the same console is not dragged from one gig to the next. Vendors contemplating the purchase of a console must ask themselves who will be using their new mixing board, who the…

Touring in support of their most recent album, Accelerate, R.E.M. selected Oxnard, California-based Rat Sound to handle sound reinforcement requirements, with Brett Eliason serving as FOH engineer and George Squiers handling monitor mix honors. Clair Brothers sublet two Midas XL8 digital mixing consoles (for house and monitors) to Rat Sound for the tour. “We pushed for the Midas consoles,” Eliason notes, adding, “Having the Midas preamps at the front end and a true 24-bit, 96 kHz digital resolution were the…

Founded in 1994 by Lollapalooza veteran Kevin Lyman, the Vans Warped Tour has now grown to feature as many as 100 bands per stop, spread among numerous stages. This year (2008), North America’s longest running tour traveled to well over 40 different cities, sometimes going from stop to stop for more than a full week without a day off. A few years ago, as part of the Warped Eco Initiative (WEI) to “clean up and green up,” the tour deployed…

Dutch violinist and conductor André Rieu recently brought the world’s largest transportable set to stadiums across Australia, staging an unparalleled classical spectacle for anticipating audiences. The stunning production included a 125-meter-wide stage with a 600-square-meter ice skating rink, a gold coach pulled by six white horses, and a full-size reproduction of Vienna’s famed Schönbrunn Castle, replete with golden ballroom and gilded chandeliers. Montreal-based Solotech met Rieu’s demand for sonic excellence with a sound system headlined by Meyer Sound loudspeakers, based…
