    digital consoles
    PSW Staff 05/11/12 01:47 PM,
The tide of digital consoles continues to rise. In general, they’re getting smaller and lighter, but overall capabilities are increasing at a steady pace. Already this year we’ve seen several companies introduce new models and series, and they all look to be smartly executed packages, providing users with more. More I/O. More networking. More recording capability. More effects. And, well, just more. This is an ideal scenario for the marketplace. If you’re more focused on the “look and feel,” there… View this post

    martin audio
    Jason Baird 05/10/12 11:11 AM,
In 2010, Martin Audio brought a radical new approach to touring sound with the Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA), an integrated system that is self-powered with six channels of amplification and DSP, networked with both audio and control on the same cable. Furthering the package is a combination of cellular drive and fast, automated optimization software. Cellular technology helps achieve phase-coherent summation across the respective coverage area, holding both frequency response and SPL within a very tight, user-specified window. The new… View this post

    PSW Staff 05/08/12 02:59 PM,
Last September, Adamson Systems Engineering made public some of the details of Project Energia, which includes a new series of loudspeaker systems with networkable Class D amplifier modules, DSP, cable and power distribution, AVB network hardware with software integration of control, and 3-D simulation and diagnostics. The system will be under touchscreen control. Adamson is releasing information about Energia in phases, each defined by close work with several leading sound companies who agreed to serve as beta partners. Phases include:… View this post

    nexo
    Paul Watson 05/07/12 05:47 PM,
At Prolight+Sound in Frankfurt last March, NEXO revealed its concept for a new modular-design high-end loudspeaker series called STM. Just prior to the show, I paid a visit to the French manufacturer at its Paris headquarters to get the full low-down the new system. The STM (Scale Through Modularity) project actually got underway more than two years ago when NEXO decided to replace the popular GEO T Series line array (launched in 2002) and build a “next generation” system. In… View this post

    microphones
    Gary Gand 05/04/12 05:21 PM,
Ever heard of the Zagat Restaurant Guide? The Zagats (whom I’ve met) are a husband and wife team who sift through hundreds (thousands?) of forms sent in by diners (folks who eat at restaurants). The resulting ratings are democratic instead of “demo-critic” (critics are often tainted by too much booze or bad attitudes) or “demo-vicious” (bad hair day taken out on the poor restaurant owner). I look at this overview as kind of a Zagat Microphone Guide. The instrument mic… View this post

    Jon Tidey 05/04/12 11:46 AM,
This article is provided by Audio Geek Zine.   This is an old but very effective trick for mic’ing kick drums. Take a Yamaha NS10 speaker cone and use that to capture the extra low frequencies of the drum. Without going into too much theory about this, a dynamic microphone and a speaker are essentially the same thing: they’re both transducers. They take acoustical energy and convert it into electrical energy or vice versa. So what you do is take… View this post

    PSW Staff 05/03/12 08:36 AM,
Lectrosonics has expanded the ASPEN digital matrix processor family with the new SPNDNT network processor, a full-featured DSP that can address both the ASPEN and Dante matrices and add mixing, gain, and delay functions to the digital audio signals. Any of the 48 final mixes in the ASPEN matrix can be assigned to any one or more of the Dante channels for transport to other endpoints in the network. Dante signals can also be imported into the ASPEN matrix in… View this post

    PSW Staff 05/02/12 03:01 PM,
Point Source Audio has introduced the CO-5w, a new “unsinkable” waterproof earworn microphone outfitted with a special water-protected mic element. The CO-5w offers omnidirectional polar pattern that allows a 360-degree pick-up of sound, providing a natural blend of voice and ambience. The design of the CO-5w also lends itself to reduced speech produced “popping sounds” and voice overloads in close mic applications. “We’re super excited about our ‘unsinkable’ feature,” says Yvonne Ho, vice president of marketing at Point Source Audio.… View this post

    Kyle P. Snyder 05/02/12 01:41 PM,
This is a review of Quiztones, frequency ear training apps for Mac & iOS from Audiofile Engineering. As engineers, we all have particular strengths and weaknesses. Some are musically gifted and play multiple instruments, while others naturally take to composition. However, what about the most basic of skills - our hearing? Unless you have absolute pitch or synesthesia, we’re all playing with the hand dealt to us a birth. The only thing we can do is hone our auditory perception.… View this post
