The recent re-construction of the Moonlight Amphitheatre, a city-owned, city-run outdoor facility presenting Broadway musical productions, featured a new sound system powered by 34 Powersoft amplifiers. The sound system, designed by Acoustic Dimensions, covers the 900 permanent seats and the 1,200-capacity lawn area with separate vocal and music systems. The choice of Powersoft was based on sound quality, on-board DSP and space considerations with resulting electric service and cooling equipment savings. “We needed to power an extensive system, in terms…

The exhibit technology team at Bowen Technovation recently chose to install Furman Sound PS-PRO II power conditioner/sequencers and AC-215 power conditioners at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola, Mississippi. The units protect sensitive components in the museum’s multimedia exhibits, while at the same time enhancing audio and video performance for an optimal visitor experience. At any museum, the last thing visitors want to see is an “out of order” sign on a multimedia exhibit. Opened in…

Church Sound Application Profile: Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Dallas

What makes for an optimum church sound reinforcement system? On the surface, the obvious answer is “good sound quality.” Yet anyone possessing a grain of systems experience knows the correct answer is much more complicated. First, how does one define “good”? It has so many meanings, all of them potentially correct (or not!). Besides, the effectiveness of a system goes way beyond the realm of the often-subjective issue of sound quality. For example, is the system designed to be operator…

With each model weighing less than 1 pound, these ultra-compact, versatile power amplifiers are specifically designed to be located in places typically off limits to traditional-sized amplifiers. These amplifiers are ENERGY STAR compliant and incorporate Stewart Audio’s proprietary Signal Sense Power Technology (SSPT) that ensures the amplifier is only powered when there is a signal present, thus saving energy…

Eliminating Troublesome Hum & Buzz Created By Electric Guitars

You’re recording an electric guitar, or amplifying it through a P.A., and there it is: hum! This annoying sound is a common occurrence. Acoustic guitars fitted with pickups can have the same problem. Hum is an unwanted 60 Hz tone—50 Hz outside the U.S.—plus harmonics. If the harmonics are especially strong, the hum becomes an edgy buzz. Let’s take a look at what’s going on and how to fix it. First we need to review how an electric guitar works.…

NLFX Professional recently installed an extensive new sound system headed by Electro-Voice components at Creekside Christian Fellowship, a church located southeast of Houston, Texas. With the help of EV’s IRIS-Net remote-control and supervision software, NLFX continues to monitor the performance of Creekside’s new system from its offices nearly 1,500 miles away in Bemidji, Minn. NLFX’s Travis Scharn described the project: “Creekside is really in the first of three stages of completion. At this point the main, 450-seat worship space acts…

A Widely Distributed PA In Paris To Bring A “Home” Message To The Masses

It’s hardly rare to hear the words “major motion picture event” applied to a summer film. Visually stunning or not, whether it’s the latest Hollywood biopic, all-star comedy or action adventure, the phrase is attached to big budget summer flicks so permanently and casually that we hardly take notice. In the case of director Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s environ-epic “Home”, however, that phrase actually rings true… Produced by Luc Besson and backed by PPR, a French holding company that specializes in some…

Road Test In Process: Mackie HD1531 Three-Way Self-Powered Loudspeaker
PSW Staff
08/17/09 10:28 AM,
Mackie describes the HD1531 as a “15” High-Definition Powered Loudspeaker System”. Yep, it’s got a 15” woofer, and it’s a three-way system, and it’s powered. Now what’s all this about being “High Definition”? I suppose I could try to explain it, but it might be easier if you just go here (pdf) and get the Mackie explanation. The ordinary every-day non-HD attributes of this powered loudspeaker include 900 watts of power with an 1800 watt peak. Power is divided 700/100/100…
