Editor’s Note: Here’s a fun and interesting thread from the PSW Live Audio Board (LAB) forums. Enjoy. Posted by Kurt I was wondering how you guys deal with singers that want their monitors so loud that you can’t get any gain out of the microphone. Reply by Mike Just wanted to add a few LESSER items that affect the singer’s perceived volume, since everyone else discussed the primary ones. Monitor competition by: —Placement of guitar amps. Jeremy Carter 03/15/12 04:11 PM,
This article is provided by Jeremy Carter.   There are several different types of pickups and microphones to choose from. Here is a basic overview. Soundhole Magnetic Pickup Pros: It’s easy, inexpensive, and can give decent results very quickly. Cons: Because it is a magnetic pickup (like an electric guitar pickup), its sound is a little more dark and electronic sounding. Also, you have to deal with the annoying cable coming out of your soundhole. Connection to PA: Direct box,… View this post

    in-ear monitoring
    Jack Kontney 03/14/12 02:29 PM,
In-ear monitors (IEMs) are radically different from the traditional floor wedge method of providing a monitor mix to performers. For many artists and engineers, they are the ideal monitor solution. But for others, they’re simply a method of trading one set of problems (extreme volume, tiny sweet spot, feedback potential) for another (sense of isolation, can’t hear amps or audience). Clever engineers and earphone manufacturers have come up with various methods of handling these issues, all of which revolve around… View this post

When it comes to maximizing their mix, streamlining workflow and meeting the needs of their artists, few monitor engineers are willing to say they’re doing anything entirely unique. Still, every artist has different demands, and that informs choices made in monitor world. We tracked down several engineers working in various genres to talk about the approaches they’ve developed to meet those demands, quickly and efficiently, at the console level. Original music and audio post production house Earhole Studios in Chicago has installed a Genelec 5.1 Active DSP Monitoring System as part of an upgrade to surround sound mixing capabilities in Studio B. Concurrently, composer and engineer Eric Lambert acquired a Genelec SE (Small Environment) DSP Monitoring System for his home studio to enable him to seamlessly transfer projects between Earhole Studios and his home composition room. The new 5.1 system in Earhole’s Studio B comprises five Genelec 8240A Bi-Amplified… View this post

    PSW Staff 02/28/12 04:58 PM,
The sanctuary of the church of the Salvation Army in Clearwater, FL, was recently outfitted with a new sound reinforcement system by Florida-based CSI: Christian Sound Installations that is headed by Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers, subwoofers, monitors and processing. “The main trouble with the old system was a profound lack of intelligibility together with deeply uneven coverage,” explains Paul Garner of CSI. “It started out as a tight-packed center cluster of horn-loaded cabinets, and the church paid someone too much… View this post

    PSW Staff 02/24/12 12:36 PM,
Post production facility Union Editorial has upgraded the monitors in the larger of its two audio production and mixing studios with Genelec Active Monitors. Because the L.A.-based facility regularly handles high-end agency clients, including Chevy, McDonald’s, Fiat and Diet Pepsi while also doing a fair share of feature film work and movie trailers, it needs 5.1 monitoring that can cover the gamut of media needs. The new monitoring system, consisting of three Genelec 8250A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors for the L-C-R… View this post

    Jeremy Carter 02/23/12 03:14 PM,
This article is provided by Jeremy Carter.   At one of the churches I’m currently working with, the situation is all too common. It’s a large multigenerational congregation with a lot of history. As such, the attendance trend is for an older crowd to populate the early service, with the later service being dominated by younger families. This is not surprisingm as the same thing is happening all across the country, evidenced by numerous posts by technical directors on their… View this post

Lady Antebellum has won the hearts of listeners everywhere with rich vocal harmonies, superb playing and songwriting talent, and captured the “Country Album of the Year” GRAMMY Award for its third studio album, Own the Night. A big part of the band’s pure country pop sound is the engineering of Clarke Schleicher, Studio Services Director of Warner Music Nashville, who was credited for the GRAMMY Award along with producer Paul Worley.
