An hour southeast of Vancouver and mere minutes from Canada’s southern border, the town of Aldergrove is home to Living Word Fellowship. The church purchased a “fixer-upper” and began major upgrades to prepare the building for services. The 550-seat sanctuary recently underwent a long-needed expansion and renovation that included new acoustical treatment, audio, and video systems designed and installed by Langley, BC-based Pro Sound and Stage Lighting Ltd. As Pro Sound’s John Drake explains, “the sanctuary was built in 1982,… View this post

Karlheinz Stockhausen’s electronic masterpiece Oktophonie entitled “Licht” (“Light”) recently made its New York premier at Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan. Oktophonie is a musical experience where the audience is surrounded by eight groups of loudspeakers, enveloping them in a sonic environment. The piece was performed by Kathinka Pasveer, an early Stockhausen collaborator, and Igor Kavulek, Stockhausen’s personal sound technician. A DiGiCo SD8 digital console and Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers and digital processing was specified by Kavulek for the show and… View this post

After twelve studio albums, numerous international concerts, and developing the well earned reputation as ‘one of the premiere bands in Canadian music history,’ Blue Rodeo kicked off 2013 with their celebratory 25 Years Tour. Playing theatres and small arenas around Canada, the production needed a show pack that could adjust to a range of audience sizes, while still remaining manageable for a relatively small crew. With the help of Apex Sound & Light, in Toronto, and d&b audiotechnik, Blue Rodeo… View this post

New Zealand’s oldest and largest public art gallery, the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, recently underwent a massive restoration that transformed the building into a world-class cultural facility that now features a world-class audio system with Harman’s JBL loudspeakers. The upgrade was designed and installed by two New Zealand-based companies, Jands and Provision, working together to provide a networked audio system as part of the AV upgrade. Opening in February 1888, the gallery has increasingly become a focal point… View this post

When Holland, Michigan’s Central Wesleyan Church celebrated its 115th anniversary and paid off the mortgage on its current worship center, the church’s leadership team immediately knew what their first project should be: acoustic treatments and a new sound system for their 2,800-seat, fan-shaped main sanctuary. After a careful search for the right systems consultant, the church hired Dallas-based Acoustic Dimensions, which created an equipment specification for the space built on L-Acoustics’ KUDO platform. According to Central Wesleyan Facilities Manager Dwayne… View this post

Although they’ve been around for decades, line source (“column”) loudspeakers have enjoyed increased popularity due to recent upgrades in technology. With a slim physical footprint that addresses aesthetic concerns, they’re an attractive option in many applications, particularly in highly reverberant acoustic environments, offering minimal vertical coverage above and below the enclosure and coherent sound (particularly in the vocal range). This can be achieved passively or in tandem with DSP that offers further tailoring of coverage. Let’s have a look at… View this post

Some in audio think that the term “rigging” only applies when loudspeakers are flown, but it also pertains to lesser endeavors such as placing a single loudspeaker on a tripod stand. The bottom line is that for any piece of production gear not sitting directly on the ground, steps must be in place to insure that it does not fall and injure someone (or worse). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the U.S. agency that sets and enforces work… View this post
